Unofficial consul for empanadas and self appointed Wellington spokesperson for ajiaco.
At this point in my life no less than 50% of my communication in noisy spaces consists of asking others to repeat what they said and nodding in agreement.
Agreement to what?
I'll never know, but turns out I also prefer to live in fear of being asked about it eventually, rather than asking again.

Friendly reminder that dishwashers made after 1995 or so are so water and energy efficient that even if you ran them twice fully loaded it would still use less water than handwashing the same load.

So many "green" things feel like sacrifices. Dishwashers are not one of them.

Low ballot returns in the local government elections so far? That's worrying - but highlighting 'low turnout' can turn it into a self-fulfilling prophecy. Better: show that many are voting, share local examples, and remind people their vote counts. A 🧵 #nzpol

We'd love to have a huge turn out for Nic's talk. Please help spread the word. There are downloadable pdf adverts in the link below. They can be emailed or printed. If you work in a public space (e.g. Library) you could help by printing and posting one of the flyers. Ngā mihi nui!

To state the obvious: if acceptance and even celebration of war crimes was the secret sauce for military success, the Russian army would be in Paris by now.

1/ A longtime Wired editor just wrote a mush-brained essay about how he totally missed the political rot of Silicon Valley (& still doesn't get it).

But in the late 1990s, a Wired journalist warned of a toxic ideology bubbling up from tech. Paulina Borsook has largely been erased. Let's change that

She basically invented astrophysics.
She proved the laws of chemistry, quantum mechanics, and statistical mechanics, not just gravity, applied universally.
She determined the composition of the sun and primacy of hydrogen in the universe.
She advised the PhDs of Frank Drake and Frank Kameny.
Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin ✨ figured out what stars are made of ✨ when she was just 25. 🔭🧪

Her PhD thesis basically established the Harvard astro department — at a time when Harvard didn't officially allow woman students.

I wrote this little profile to mark the 100th anniversary of her thesis:

Post a perfect album from the 1990s that isn't grunge...
CDs were expensive, so I had these on tapes recorded by my cousin, who always made sure I had a copy of any CDs he got his hands on. I listened to these almost daily on a beaten Walkman held together by tape.

Today is publication day for this beautiful thing. I hope that it will tell a broad audience what historians of science have now long recognized: that alchemy was not a superstitious aberration but rather, an important phase in the history of ideas and of manufacturing.
