Cuomintang sympathetic forces have launched a counter attack in the outer boroughs
Per recent reports, it appears that Julia Menin has attained the support needed to become Speaker of the NYC Council, with 35 Council People publicly supporting her — granting her 36 votes (including herself) to become Speaker of the Council.

I’ve seen multiple people on TikTok opposing the ballot question that would move NYC elections on-cycle because it would “make it less special” and I can’t explain it but these are future NIMBYs

This week on the blog: Peasants! We are at last putting together and wrapping up our discussion of life for pre-industrial peasants - a category which includes a majority of all humans who have ever lived.

How we can model how they lived, worked, loved and died.

This is the fifth and final part of our series (I, II, IIIa, IIIb, IVa, IVb, IVc, IVd, IVe) looking at the structures of life for pre-modern peasant farmers and showing how historical modeling can …

This is similar to my flagship housing compromise where any building can be built anywhere but all triangles on the property must have interior angles that sum to 190 degrees
Wait what

For the 1st time since the mid-20th c, a major urban US transit network is going to be largely destroyed.

Philadelphia’s SEPTA must cut 45% of service, starting NEXT MONTH.

45% is not “waste fraud and abuse.” It’s “would you like to keep your heart or your lungs?”

Open question: Has the New York City subway gained or lost revenue track miles since February 29th 1968, the day the Program For Action was announced?

@fredstaffordcs.bsky.social knocks it out of the park with this. The NYPA nuclear announcement should be celebrated as one of the most critical experiments in rebuilding state capacity in the country. The way we win is with big public investment at all scales:

Can’t speak to the generational aspect. But the “they’re going to draft us!” type rhetoric fits in the “Ugh tired of living in interesting times!” category of post in that they’re a kind of luxury belief that lets you feel like a put upon victim of things that are really victimizing other people.
this is basically true as a matter of strategy but also god do i hate that young zoomer men are such fucking marks
We had months to respond to this and didn't because leadership thought "being online" was a bad thing. I watched it spin up in real time

Well everyone, the mayoral election is here. We have a choice between a man supported by the working classes of New York City, and a man supported by the wealthy professional class and recent gentrifiers

Hopefully the wealthy professionals win and we don’t have 8 years of Andrew Cuomo

There’s a lot of housing people on here who pretend to be by the numbers market guys and it’s always funny when they give the game away by saying stuff like “landlords will not try to bid down brokers wages” and “landlords have been charging hundreds of dollars under market”
There were a lot of people saying the LL’s cost to rent out an apartment would simply fall a lot since, if they had to pay the fee directly, they would drive a harder bargain with brokers (which never made sense to me, given how not-extravagant rental brokers’ incomes already are).

To put it another way, there is a nontrivial risk that Mamdani will badly mismanage the city bureaucracy, and a dead certainty that Cuomo will.

Why Railroading’s Growth Engine Might Be Stalling

And some of us have stupider, more specific interests (enjoy looking at construction equipment)
While the interest convergence critique of YIMBYism has some merit, "this problem that has long afflicted the working class has new political salience because it is now affecting the professional class" is a rare opportunity for left housing activists to form new coalitions and make political gains.
