They’re pulling cops and feds off of every other case they have in order to pull off this show of strength. It’s the kind of political environment that actually makes a lot of illegal operations much easier: proportional to how dangerous—and expansive—it makes the social margins.

This does not make them less dangerous, I want to be clear about that. It just changes the nature of the threat we’re dealing with. They’re not interested in particulars, accuracy; they’re interested in a spectacle of power and brutality.

Pretty much every public statement made by this administration about military and police force has been an announcement that they’re abandoning the strategic benefits of counterinsurgency in order to cull the population and project a patriarchal warrior fantasy.

Instead of taking care to alienate insurgents from the general population, attempting to establish state legitimacy, etc. they’re just declaring broad swaths of the population de-facto insurgent and applying brute force accordingly.

Under the second Trump administration it’s hard to call much of its movements counterinsurgent, when by the military’s own theory of counterinsurgency they’re repeatedly taking actions that exacerbate an insurgent political environment.

By the wide documentation of resistance to ICE, it seems to be having exactly the effect military counterinsurgency theorists warn against: much of the population sees their interests more aligned with state “enemies” than with its agents and are willing to act accordingly.

Sure do love that we're essentially just playing one big game of chicken with the federal govt and you never know which threats are real and which ones are bluffs

Also an important lesson for cis White folks (straight men especially): Your threat of withholding support or allyship means less than nothing to anyone historically marginalized. It's literally the baseline assumption we work from. You're not "showing us," you're just confirming our expectations.
