To the 3 people reading this: imma take a break from Bluesky for a while. Till the end of July at least; maybe longer.

I thought oh, I'll join Bluesky. I'll learn good stuff, I'll have good conversations with smart people.

WHAT
Lawyers for ICE are increasingly hiding their identities in court. This is completely unprecedented.

“We’re not really doing names publicly,” said Judge ShaSha Xu — after stating her own name and those of the immigrants and their lawyers.

Today I learned that Trump's immigrant concentration camp in the Everglades is being built IN A WILDLIFE PRESERVE and they haven't even filed an environmental impact statement. The Center for Biological Diversity is suing, and you can give them some money if you want to help.

This is a painful and important article to read, by an Israeli IDF veteran.

I've never been to Israel, but I too grew up in a Zionist household. None of us want Israel to be guilty of genocide. The very idea is horrifying. But we have to face the truth. 1/
"What are the ramifications of this rift between genocide scholars and Holocaust historians? This is not merely a squabble within academe. The memory culture created in recent decades around the Holocaust encompasses much more than the genocide of the Jews." www.nytimes.com/2025/07/15/o...

The Weimar constitution had a clause allowing the chancellor to govern by fiat in certain circumstances. When I first read about that I thought, what a crazy thing to put in a constitution. Now we have a Supreme Court that amounts to the same thing.

Aux armes, citoyens,
Formez vos bataillons,
Marchons, marchons !
Qu'un sang impur
Abreuve nos sillons!

I'm not so keen on the "sang impur" part, but the rest of it is working for me. Bon 14e juillet, mes gosses.

I've been wondering about this with the Orioles, since my favorite players are all Dominican.
I'm sure the first and only question MLB owners asked Manfred is "do we still have to pay for games missed due to players being put in a camp?"
The MLB Players' Association has urged non-U.S. born members, which include some @tigers.bsky.social, to carry documentation to avoid confusion over immigration. bit.ly/4lSTpot

So what's everyone doing for Bastille Day tomorrow? I'd like to go storm a prison but so far I haven't found a mob to do it with.

Thank you. I'm so very tired of this.
I’m getting really tired of having to explain repeatedly that no “semitism” is not a thing. Nobody is the Semitic race. Not Jews. Not Palestinians. So I’m going to do this thread to link to every time I see it now:

Positive view of immigration is at an all-time high. And all it took was a little fascism. Kidnapping and torture FTW.
Gallup has new polling on immigration. Topline findings:
-Americans hate Trump's immigration policy (35% approve, 62% disapprove)
-Share who say immigration is a "good thing" for the country just hit an all-time high (79%)

Oh Israel, you are on a dark, dark path. Anyone who claims to love Israel and isn't trying to stop this -- you don't love Israel. You're in love with death and destruction. "Choose life, that you may live."

Gosh, I wonder what it *is* about, then? Could it be . . . RACISM?

I think we have a winner!

They're giving out lil flags at my neighborhood parade. I fixed mine.
July 4, 2025 at 2:02 PM
I tried to zhuzh up my "No Kings" sign with some glitter glue for tomorrow's parade. Now it looks like I let a four-year-old decorate it. My wife says no one will know that's not what I did.

When is Shabbat, again? I could really fucking use a Shabbat right now.

Not sure I'm up for tomorrow's usual goofy July 4 parade. I was gonna bring my No Kings sign, but still.

I came here to say I was grieving, and saw this.

Today we grieve. Tomorrow we fight (again). And those of us with white native-born privilege in particular need to be ready to put our bodies and our bank accounts on the line.

Thanks for your leadership, AOC.
I am grieving the barbarism that is going to unfurl from all this. People are going to die. Livelihoods gone. All to feed a corrupt kleptocracy.

I see every day up close how different it is from the first time around. There are no guardrails. A disaster. I’m sorry we have to live through this.

For those wondering what Mamdani has *actually said* about Jews and Israel/Palestine, here are the quotes. Unless you think BDS is inherently antisemitic, which I do not, they're pretty benign.

And here I thought she was an absolute waste of space. Turns out that's only true 99% of the time.

Apparently this is what "America First" means.
It’s a dark day in U.S. foreign policy as the Trump admin completes its illegal dismantling of USAID.

The dedicated men and women of USAID have set a shining example across the globe.

As this report shows, these cuts will have deadly consequences — and Trump and Rubio are responsible.
USAID cuts could lead to 14 million deaths over the next five years, researchers say
An analysis published Monday in the medical journal The Lancet projects that cuts to the agency will lead to more deaths from diseases like AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.

Only 19 members of Congress signed this letter against the weaponization of food "aid" to Gaza. None are from Maryland. Bernie Sanders is the only Senator. I know he's been busy, but I was disappointed not to see Chris Van Hollen.
The full letter with names.

Apologies, no alt text.

Fuckin' YIKES.

The memo is dated June 11, before the NY primary. Still awfully convenient.
The White House has ordered the US Dept. of Justice to prioritize denaturalization: voiding the citizenship of US citizens.

Who will it denaturalize? "Any" case that it "determines to be sufficiently important".

Point 10 leaves the criteria opaque and arbitrary.

May her memory be for a blessing.

This is why some of us worry about phrases like "globalize the intifada" -- because to at least one person, "Free Palestine" means "throw Molotov cocktails at an old lady who wants us to remember the hostages."
Baruch Dayan HaEmet. We mourn the passing of 82-year-old Karen Diamond, who died from injuries sustained in the horrific antisemitic attack in Boulder several weeks ago. May her family, friends, and community at Congregation Bonai Shalom be comforted.
