You ever just sit down and realize that the rise of 21st century fascism is capital's answer to climate change?

Essentialism is bad my friends, one way ticket to even more fascism.
Researchers are now saying that AI can find correlations between facial characteristics and success on the job.

The Economist says that corporations would have a “strong incentive” to deploy this technology when looking at applicants.

So we're just seeing the tip of the iceberg with the psychological shit chatgpt is causing. This is going to take decades of people's lives to patch up, if it can be patched at all.

A rare interview with the creators of the always-funny, always-brilliant, and *usually*-sexy—or occasionally anti-sexy—OGLAF!

Cooper has kept a low profile over the years, but is legitimately one of the very best artists in comics today. Read OGLAF if you're old enough to drive!
Talking Oglaf with Trudy Cooper and Doug Bayne: 'We'd stay up all night drawing stuff to make each other laugh' - The Comics Journal
Other than some time off every year for Christmas, Trudy Cooper and Doug Bayne have delivered a new Oglaf comic, skewering fantasy tropes with absolutely not safe for work humor, every week since 2008...

theres posts going around to turn off the "rude poster" moderation in your settings, and I decided to also set everything else to "warn" (bc bsky had them auto set to "hide") and ive encountered some posts with these "warnings" that were so innocuous they made me laugh out loud

Ah, the 'avocado toast' argument is back in force for a new generation. Lovely.
“At the same time, more than half of Gen Z members say they are struggling to make ends meet, yet a majority buy themselves a small treat, such as a pastry, coffee, or sweet, at least once a week. That can lead to overspending…”

I used to think the bad guy in stories having the sole motivation of 'wanting to destroy the world' was just some shoddy writing but I guess reality has proven me wrong about that.

Keep seeing people saying “everyone wants a village but no one wants to be a villager” and I feel that’s so wrong. I think everyone to a degree wants to connect with the people around them but they don’t always know how.

I really struggle with social stuff, but I love being useful.

A whole bunch of software systems that can't be used today because they require an online login. Reliance on an internet connection remains such a volatile point of failure, it's time we start building robust systems with fail safes again.
There's an AWS outage this morning impacting lots of services; it started around 07.30 UK time. People who use services like Alexa as their alarm clocks have just had a helpful reminder that using a device reliant on connectivity to carry out a task that doesn't need connectivity is not a good idea.

Sleep is a biological necessity, and sleep deprivation has real physical, psychological, and social consequences that need to be taken seriously. The way our society treats it as slothful to sleep according to natural rhythms (including midday naps and variant chronotypes like night owls) is evil.
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

This is the future of Windows. Microsoft wants to rewrite Windows to turn computers into AI PCs that you talk to. It's now bringing AI features to all Windows 11 PCs today, in a bid to convince you to talk to your PC and let AI control it. Full details 👇 www.theverge.com/news/799768/...

So many sentiments in this one that I share. Mostly re: the state of social media, but also: "I have spent a not insignificant number of hours writing some absolutely criminal CSS"

NEW: Since October 2023, the IDF Spokesperson's Unit has released dozens of 3D animations illustrating alleged Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iranian sites

The style is now unmistakable: satellite zoom-ins, black & white wireframes, and red-textured houses - a new visual language of war

At this point I'm very willing to pay for one of the bluesky alternatives so I can be done with this place. A cooperative, self-sustaining social media platform would be very nice.
Unfortunate update: Link reached out to BlueSky and got email back now on reason.

His appeal is denied. He will remain permanently banned on BlueSky’s side.

Here are the screenshots he just sent me as of 8:22 AM EST(my time)

Sometimes I wonder how much of the AI madness isn't also fueled by this deep desire we seem to have for an enchanted world. A place where magical things happen, where the gods still exist, where our life is inherently meaningful, where we get to be the chosen ones.

I still largely don't understand why we needed any of this instead of building up from blogs and the various protocols around that (modulo DNS, but AP/ATproto are not in practice independent of DNS today). The RSS reader I used >20 years ago was better at threads and reposts than BSky or Mastodon.

The myth of meritocracy inspires the implicit assumption that someone’s degree of success reflects their level of competence and skill.

I think that this is one of the most toxic myths of our time.

This is a beautiful, long read but full of brilliance. Though my worldview was shaped in a completely different way than the author's (being of different generations does that I guess) I have similar concerns about the digital world and its alienating properties.
