History professor @ OU, views are my own. Author of Mastering Emotions, 2021. I write about slavery, emotions, & poison, I skeet about teaching, politics, & pop culture. She / hers. Proud union member. Live in Detroit but my heart is still in NOLA
The good news is that I finally found a pediatric endontologist and they can fit the kiddo in today so we’ll get more answers about the teeth she broke in an accident. The bad news is grades are due tomorrow and the accident has me so far behind. Also a pipe in the guest bathroom is frozen. Monday!

'For humanities departments to continue to matter, they must challenge the modern world rather than accommodate it. Indeed, the most useful lesson the humanities have to offer today is a profoundly countercultural one: Difficulty is good, an end in its own right.' 2/2

Just last weekend I explained to my 8yo kid’s Harry Potter-loving friend why I don’t support JK Rowling, which led to a convo about trans folks & one about art & artist, the friend compared it to their dad refusing to play R Kelly. So when people say “how will I explain?” I just think “skill issue.”
"i can't explain trans people to my child!!" oh so you're stupid AND bigoted? pick a struggle bitch

One year ago today a little French lady give me two wee boxes of illicit beans. Sadly she wasn’t at our friends’ annual posada party this year, I hope she’s thriving, the Jean Appleseed of Tonka beans.
At one of the holiday parties we attended last night this little old French woman was giving people boxes each containing one Tonka bean. I learned this morning they’re illegal in the states? I aspire to that level of eccentricity:

Hope the media is proud.

Got the 8yo hooked on #Taskmaster by showing her series 20 and Taskmaster Junior which is hosted by Rose Matafeo, so now we’re going back and watching series 9, which Rose was on, A+ activity for an icy cold weekend with a kid recovering from a concussion and broken nose.

Boycotts being named for "Charles Boycott" is my favorite fact that sounds made up but is real. It's like saying dump trucks are named after Samuel Dumptruck. The inventer of calisthenics? Jennifer Calisthenics.

Bring back shunning evil people so hard their names become synonymous with rejection.
Most people don't know that the gerrymander is named after Gerry Mander.

Absolutely staggering to consider the deadweight loss that AI has caused educators in terms of burdening them by making cheating easier, and how little our society's elites care
Across the country, a small but growing number of educators are experimenting with oral exams to circumvent the temptations presented by powerful artificial intelligence platforms such as ChatGPT.
To AI-proof exams, professors turn to the oldest technique of all

I think that vapid man who got lucky enough to flip a worthless company into an inconceivable fortune that is impossible to outspend should have as much influence over public policy as I do: One vote, at election time. Nothing more.

Woof, about five minutes after I dropped her off the kid fell in the gym and broke her nose and chipped her front teeth, it has been a DAY. So may incredible pediatricians and dentists today.

We moved from New Orleans to Michigan and thought it would weather (bleak heh) climate change better, the first week here was a “once in a century flood” that flooded so many basements and highways. Now every summer we face weeks of bad air quality from Canadian wildfires. There is no haven.
From one flooded “climate haven” (Asheville) to another, the discourse is so damaging. Nowhere is safe from climate change. We had family lose their home in the Marshall Fire in CO a few years ago. We were evacuated for 3 weeks w/ our infant after Helene.
Western Washington is currently experiencing record flooding from a series of strong atmospheric rivers. 12 rivers are at major flood stage. 100,000 people await evacuation orders.

Will some places see less severe climate impacts than others? Yes. Does anywhere promise safe haven? Absolutely not.

It’s not dessert unless there’s chocolate in it, no further questions.
What’s your most controversial dessert opinion?

Options that make me feel skipping dessert:

Cannoli (actually most Italian pastries of that kind)

Tiramisu (sorry again, Italy)

Panettone (oh fuck IM SORRY)

British Christmas cake/pudding

Flan

Creme Brûlée

Pavlova or any kind of meringue

Last night it looked like we might get the “Parents’ Delight” (educator partner has a snow day but kiddo doesn’t) but the kid’s school district called it late last night. With snow & rain falling in equal measure I’m lucky my uni is closed for an HVAC issue, my in person exam was scheduled today.
Shoutout to all the other households with multiple educators and children playing the seasonal game of “What combination of us will have a snow day tomorrow?”

He's not a god king who is divinely owed a throne, he is a man who might run for president in a primary that is years away. Now is the exact time for us to be shouting from the rooftops that transphobes won't get our vote so we demand other candidates.
"How can you say you're never voting for Newsom? You're handing the election to the GOP!"

Because I don't vote for Republicans, ever. Newsom is a racist, transphobic, genocide supporting Republican. Ergo, I am not voting for him. Find me someone who isn't a Republican and I'll consider them.
