History professor @ OU, views are my own. Author of Mastering Emotions, 2021. I write about slavery, emotions, & poison, I skeet about teaching, politics, & pop culture. She / hers. Proud union member. Live in Detroit but my heart is still in NOLA
The grandmothers are planning a scavenger hunt for the kids tomorrow and told me they planned to make an AI generated treasure map. I came down on that idea like a Luddite hammer and then felt obligated to make an artisanal map, complete with singed edges, to prove a point.

“Looking to deep fry a turkey this year, an activity so dangerous that fire departments release annual PSAs warning against it? Then pick a name you can trust: Loco Cookers!”

Very similar article in today’s Detroit Free Press op-ed section, which parses the motives of many of the political backers of data centers, from receiving money from DTE (Whitmer) to Jocelyn Benson’s husband working for this data center firm.

I’d watch a “mysterious big wave plus Marxist analysis” Edmund Fitzgerald movie.

Look on my works ye mighty and despair! All that AND the 8yo kept stealing the good rake.

Good afternoon to everyone who reads “the good rake” and immediately pictures their good rake.

This article is incredible and you better believe I'm going to work this into my lectures on first encounters between indigenous people and Columbus when I teach my American history survey next.

Scrolled by this quickly and thought folks were still sharing the photo of James Carville's living room. Same vibes, tbh:

Wheezed laughing at this. Love to see opportunists and con men rebuked in this incredible city and across the country.

Hoping these numbers hold cause I want to see the homophobic pastor who swore he wouldn’t step down from his pastor position if elected mayor get CRUSHED by Mary Sheffield, who will be the first female mayor in Detroit’s history.
November 5, 2025 at 2:25 AM
Pretty sure that Detroit is going to elect its first female mayor today but nervous that a former cop who was terrible on city council is going to beat the incumbent in our district. Can I also just brag about how classically Detroit our “I voted” stickers are?

It’s #PureMichigan that multiple people went with what they had in their closets, meaning there were three hunters who killed Bambi. Jafar and Iago were also stellar, as was meme Kermit.

Reprising Gomez and Morticia for a Disney villains themed party last night. You know the makeup is good when multiple people couldn’t use facial recognition on their phones all night.

This year potato house went with an elaborate Costco theme and was also handing out hot dogs and an array of Detroit themed screen printed bags that were a joy to see carried by folks all night. I need to befriend these mad generous geniuses.

Possible recession indicator: a house notorious for being a full sized candy bar house went with minis this year. There are now more potato houses though, one house was handing out ramen to throngs of THRILLED children dressed as K Pop Demon Hunters. And the 8yo got hot cocoa mix:

We made it to 8:20 before running out of candy last year. Will we last longer this year?

Morticia will be getting Angelica Huston makeup and press on nails tomorrow night but press ons would not have survived the candy hand out melee we just endured.
