The first time I read about this case, I cried. The second time, I was angry. The third time, I remembered that RBG and Scalia were fast friends, and it changed the way I saw the court forever.
In 1999, a woman named Jessica Gonzales sought and obtained an order of protection against her physically abusive husband ("AH"), who had repeatedly threatened to kill her and their three children. The order included language specifically limiting when and where AH was allowed to see the children.

Happy Whalesplosion Day to all who celebrate. Today we remember all mad, bad, and just plain wtf ideas.
It’s 12 November, so it’s time to mark the 55th anniversary of the exploding whale of Oregon, an attempt to clear a cetacean carcass from a beach which prompted one reporter to say “The blast blasted blubber beyond all believable bounds”

Today I learned that ever since I left high school they’ve been trying to train kids to read the same way LLMs are trained to write, by just guessing at what words might fill the blanks. This explains…so much

ever since I learned about three-cueing I've developed infinitely more patience for replies on social media. mfers literally do not know how to read. people are walking around conjuring random meanings into words they don't know, and they don't know a lot of words. it's crazy

If I wanted to prove to Joyce Carol Oates that I have, in fact, read some books, I definitely would make sure I linked to the right book. And maybe got the plot right.

you don't have to devote your free time and energy to free advertising for a tech company! lol!
When you are using the "AI" framing, does the way you talk about "AI" carry water for the Sam Altmans of the world? That is, are you helping to paint a picture of their tech as inevitable, all powerful, and/or anything other than commercial products?

There were two majors you would do in 2010 to have a forever job: computer science and marketing (first for boys & STEM, second for girls & humanities).

Now, both of those career paths are nearly impossible to sustain.
From today's Chronicle of Higher Ed briefing. I am *never* an advocate of cutting programs. But I am curious to see if there will be the same type of "students aren't majoring in this, so let's cut the program" discourse around computer science as there always is for the arts and humanities.

it's very clearly because of air travel -- they do not care about working class people. they care that middle- and upper-middle and upper-class people are starting to freak out about Thanksgiving travel plans
How about we shut down the government for this very popular and specific goal and then, hear me out, we hold out for like a month and a half and then, ok this part is important, after a watershed election where we ran the table, ONLY THEN, fold and don't get the one thing we said we wanted.

The complete lack of sincerity in anything —
The caucus meeting was just to orchestrate who would fall on the sword but not be up for a vote in 2026.
so currently defectors are:

Kaine (2030)
Shaheen (Retiring)
Hasan (2028)
Fetterman (2028)

This is a parody account. This is not a real quote.

Stop sharing it.

And if you say, "well, it's ok because it might as well be real," I will block you.

So it turns out... the US air travel system was incredibly, deeply dependent on federal funding to just run day-to-day all this time, to the benefit of private airline shareholders, when everyone thinks that state-run trains are leeching off the government. Weird!
