theatre kid, baker, woodworking. (ex-)distributed systems engineer, (bad/new) game dev... and a bad case of project distraction.

Mostly godot & unity right now.

I haven't joined a new network without folks I knew to seed my feed in a while but I'm here now!

I bounced from distributed systems into #gamedev in #godot and #unity. I advocate for folks to dive into jams and am working with Small Loan Studio on an upcoming title.

Say hi, I'd love to meet you!
A time ago @errant-signal.com introduced me to "the Ludo-Narrative debate" (www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBN3...)

I recently I learned about the divide in horny-games if they should focus on horny or game. I dub this the "lewd-o-narrative discourse"

Do not tell me if anyone has made this joke before.

So that the narrative team didn't have to wade through my (neat but over engineered) quest configs I put together a management UI + linter on some quest setup...

It's a little bittersweet but a nice parting shot over before going back to a real-boy job for a bit and after-hours game dev

Have you worked with GraphEdit / GraphNode in #godot? Is there a rational way to track your slots and ports aside from bespoke data structures and ~magic numbers?

I have so many questions. Who built this, what were they thinking? It may work for static nodes but seems bonkers for dynamic content.

one thing i enjoy about following some folks in industry but being mostly outside of it myself...

is that i have no fucking clue why we're arguing about yellow paint right now. like who started that fire? why?

lol. lmao even

this arg is particularly compelling coming off a blind play of Hellblade1 where I was extremely into the confusion when I couldn't figure out the next step.

It tied me closer to the MC w/ her tenuous grasp of reality and "searching hopelessly for signs" became compelling/immersive & not jank.

All works are a composite of tropes, and generally people tend to only get annoyed by the tropes when they don’t dig the composite.

adhd brain destroying ability to do anything rn so maybe i should actually have a break play video games for a minute instead of obsessing about minutia that doesn't really matter in my project

tbqh wouldn't be the worst to take this energy into the new year

In a funny position with godot rn where I think the 2d lighting is so bad that I'm *certain* I have to be doing something wrong or missing some key "don't be useless" flag
December 27, 2024 at 10:56 PM
holy shit this

on the other hand as much as I'd love it I'm kind of worried it would devolve ~instantly into G*mers being shits about about literally any interesting/progressive creative decisions

And in that light I'd maybe just love to see some similar-but-new IP inspired by the Whoniverse
Real talk, it’s wild to me that they’ve not licensed a gorgeous pixel arty point and clicky lucartsy Doctor Who game at any point in the last couple decades. Go on go on go on.

I don't disagree with this -- but I would say that even if you're making a free game (not financially load bearing) you likely *still* care about "broad" consumption/distribution of your art/effort

it's not clear to me that "commercially viable" is that dissimilar from normal desires of reach
Too much gamedev advice is dispensed assuming the end goal is a commercially viable game and maybe that's a problem? Making a financially load bearing game is so close to impossible that maybe setting that as the end point for all game development is creating wildly unrealistic expectations

some might call this "giving up"

I prefer to think of it as "pragmatically meeting the type system you have where its at"
circling back to this (cc @rokojori.bsky.social) I don't think it's the tool script (cf bsky.app/profile/roko...) because transferring a working build to a 2nd PC resulted in a fucked up build that I couldn't resolve.

I think the path out is drop type safety & use NodePath instead of typed @export
Not sure if it's the same. I noticed that compilation errors of tool scripts can cause problems. For me it sometimes clears all assigned data of most nodes (resets them). But I'm not super sure when this happens, but it could be related to node type changes. I'm using C#, however.
December 26, 2024 at 10:20 AM
question for y'all

#godot literally forgets how to determine if a Node in my scene tree is a type based on assigned script. When this happens it disconnects @export assignments and silently breaks my scenes. Is this a known thing? Am I doing wild shit? Reloading the scene *sometimes* resolves it.

Stein is solid I trust this list -- bit of a weird grift but I assume they all turn into content farms that eventually start selling distribution for scams
Bot accounts with fake AI-generated games are pretending to be genuine #gamedev / #indiedev accounts. Possibly for scam or spam purposes. I made a list to block them all. Share!

best christmas present -- I was doing perf analysis of my recent character controller rewrite to make sure i hadn't fucked anything and couldn't understand wtf was going on such that frame time was 15->20ms

...

oh yea, i'm running with vsync enabled. anyway frametime still at a cool [.45, .55] ms

lmao. so that's not the sin i expected to be confessing today but it's certainly the one that haunts me the most
i absolve you of your mediocrity

Seen a bunch of recs for Keylocker flying around today and it looks sick as hell. Extremely distinct vibe, fun variations on mechanics relative to genre, good length to play-and-finish over the holidays, and on sale.
Hello, blueskiers, I am Nana Moon and I'm a brazilian developer working mainly on JRPGs, but I've started on SRPGs now as well!

This is my newly released game, Keylocker, in this game you're a singer in a world without music, combat is turn based with timed actions and UNFAIR!

This full character controller rewrite is brought to you exclusively by BABYMETAL loud enough I can't hear the screams of my existing code base as I pull it apart
December 22, 2024 at 7:15 PM
idk who needs to hear this (It's me. Hi, I'm the problem. It's me) but the behaviors we learn that lead to burnout (and sometimes success!) are just that: learned behaviors.

They'll continue to foment burnout unless you *change them.* E.g. quit the job but as the only change it may not be enough.
We also tend to downplay the seriousness and expect that a few weeks off can straighten it out and like, no

Burnout can fuck you up for YEARS.

Six months in and it feels like I'm working in a real engine with #godot now.

...which is to say I'm making increasingly deranged decisions about code structure to work around esoteric engine bugs

I didn't and that's why I missed all my planned tasks for this week but let's not mention that to the production team 😅

This looks beautiful and tells a story you're not going to hear coming out of normal publishers. There's enough experience involved and progress shown I've got high hopes we'll get another moving example of when "games are art"
