I dunno, it depends. I think there *can* be an appreciable quantity of sales lost, even if just 2% or whatever. Nothing like what these losers claim, but I think we should be clear that rejecting intellectual property is a moral obligation REGARDLESS of impact upon an author's bottom line.
The point of "people who pirate books/movies can't afford to buy them" isn't poormouthing, it's that people who pirate literally WOULD NOT have bought, so the content industry propagandists' "Lost Sale Doctrine" is horseshit. If anything, downloads are free advertising that increases sales.

If you have a photographic memory and walk out of a movie theatre without a minor lobotomy forced on you, are you engaged in "intellectual property" piracy? Are you also violating people's "right to privacy" when you walk down a city street?

They're gonna say yes.

It's fine to push back against google-glasses or whatevs, but the day is going to come where we can easily record and share our memories, and a lot of anti-surveillance populism rn is laced with batshit anti-transhumanism that will outright try to *mandate* cognitive limitations in the next century.

The majority of human discourse seems to break down into “it would be bad if this were true so it’s not true” or “it would be good if this were true so it’s true” with a side of “you caused this bad thing to happen by telling me about it”.

the only actually existing forms of transhumanism are subsets of transsexuality and the hyperborean dream enjoyers are not happy with reality so they will rather kill everyone than let a girl have four arms and a pancreas that works
When the burgeoning neoreactionary movement was kicked off Less Wrong the vast majority of them very rapidly turned against transhumanism ("better to destroy all technology than let queers and brown folks use it") and started openly fetishizing becoming warlords in the smoking remains of civ.

Every mainstream attempt to grapple with the rise of Tate and other misogynist ideologues have posed them as a product of men’s despair. Few have posited them as an assault on women’s safety and dignity.
We need to talk more about how it feels to be a woman amidst this sudden onslaught of “reclaiming masculinity,” celebrating male aggression and violence, and vanishing smart experienced women from positions of power.

I have come to accept a simpler and more general argument against billionaires: by their very nature they impose centralized planning over economy they infest, becoming de-facto communist planners, and thus impose upon their habitat all the pathologies that rise from impossibility of planned econ
It may be finally sinking in that a world of radical wealth inequality is unstable, actually.

There should be reward for good work, yes. There should not be outsize reward for being born rich.

Elon Musk's only profitable company, Tesla, has created a cumulative grand total net income of $34 billion in its more than 20 years of existence.

That's less than the total amount of US federal subsidies his empire has collectively received.

The economics of Elon Musk are as bad as the politics.
Elon Musk, who has said the beneficiaries of federal spending are a "parasite class," runs businesses that have pocketed $38 billion in taxpayer-funded subsidies, loans and contracts www.washingtonpost.com/technology/i...

It would be really fucking funny though if the new edict at the Post meant that a bunch of left-libertarian sickos got in there like "Transness is the ultimate expression of personal liberty" and "Intellectual Property is an illegitimate suppressor of free markets, dismantle Amazon"

Basic data literacy fail

Everyone should read Seeing Like a State, because, buddy, if you think that data reflects reality in anything like a straightforward way or gives you an uncomplicated tool to manipulate it, are you ever in for a rude awakening
Johnson: "Elon's cracked the code. He's now inside these agencies. He's created these algorithms that are constantly crawling through the data & as he told me in his office, data doesn't lie. We're gonna be able to get the information. We're gonna be able to transform the way federal govt works."

it is, somehow, a movement that seems to genuinely, explicitly think of *itself* as evil

Fascists correctly recognize the intense delusions of liberals, but attempting to attack those delusions is a Chesterton's fence situation. Those delusions were in many ways secondary expressions of the underlying benefits they codified, but that fascists are too smugly ignorant to see.

Social media has really killed the mystique of evil, there are so many books about the psychology of Nixon or Stalin but we all know for a fact that Elon hates his father and his dick doesn’t work

People get more consistently mad about some random person's supposedly bad messaging on social media than they ever do about rapists who drive out productive long-time activists. It's costly for decentralized movements to enforce norms so we have to prioritize mission critical ones.
