A golden age of law enforcement would be “we didn’t need any”.
ICE Deputy Director Madison Sheahan: "We are ushering in the golden age of law enforcement in this country right now thanks to President Trump and the leadership from Secretary Noem"

“Ended up” and she set off the chain of events, eh? The negative consequence here is his career?

Hey, quick question: are you pathologically incapable of using anything other than passive voice? Seems weird to describe someone raping a child this way you feckless amoral cowards.
A teenager in Florida with a homeless parent wanted money for braces and ended up having sex for money with powerful men, setting off a chain of events that would have a dramatic impact on her life and help upend the political career of Representative Matt Gaetz. nyti.ms/49PSkL9

If anyone wants to see me ramble about dev stuff (gonna be mostly iOS+Swift for app dev and python for misc shitpost code projects) then I’m gonna try to be active over here. Might get extremely verbose, don’t want to crowd up main.
I'm going to attempt to use this for dev logging, probably in an extremely verbose manner so that I can get all my thoughts down in text in a way I can get to from anywhere and also that other people might be able to read if they care to.

Anyone who knows what LARP means cannot claim to speak on behalf of the normal.
It’s how you end up with language like “paperwork American” or the idea that Thanksgiving turkey is some sort of natural ethno-national tradition that certain other groups are incapable of ever appreciating

The NYT science section—Nic Wade, Gina Kolata et al—were so diabolically shit at their jobs it made me start the science section at Ars Technica back in 2003.

But it remains a great place to go if you want read about the latest treatment for mouse Alzheimers or mouse cancer.
This rot overshadows all aspects of the Times, even the stuff it does genuinely well. I genuinely like the Science section and the folks I work with: I'm quite proud of the work I've done there. But it's hard to ask people to set aside the former and focus on the latter

Seeing excerpts from The Files and a thought I had about their atrocious writing is that every stupid article written by some pompous dumbass complaining about how kids using txt speak were going to destroy the English language are even more wrong and dumb than I thought they were.

Google is hosting a CBP app that uses facial recognition to identify immigrants, while removing apps that report the location of ICE officials because Google sees ICE as a vulnerable group. @evystadium.bsky.social has more.

Yall know I used to post about the pumpkin cream cold brew every year but I’ve been off Starbucks for a while over how they treat their workers.

As someone who has also boycotted Target and has been trying to wean myself off Amazon (I have slip eras) this is by far the easiest one to skip. Do it!
While @sbworkersunited.org baristas are on strike, our job is simple: DON’T SHOP AT STARBUCKS!

Starbucks baristas are striking for a fair contract — and we’re standing with them. Show the billionaires that our solidarity is stronger than their greed. #NoContractNoCoffee

if you've got the resources and the need, right now is about as good a time to buy a graphics card as you're likely to see for quite some time (maaaaaybe sales will drive things down for black friday, but most places are already running black friday pricing today). next year looks rough.

Seattle has had a series of mayors who got elected promising to “finally” use police to crack down on homelessness — the existing policy that every previous mayor has deployed.

Once they get into office they don’t deliver because it doesn’t work. We waste four years and the problem gets worse.
The story about the gun got buried, virtually nobody in any position of influence talked about it. The more significant element of this was money. The business class within Seattle really liked his harsh-crackdowns-on-unhoused-people policy, and they put a lot of resources behind his campaign.

An aside to all this, they’re using variable width fonts in these which means that a lot of strings can be determined by block width.

Look at Ken Starr’s email block, in some you can see the @ sticking below the bar, and a couple descenders past the @

Someone who cared could reverse engineer it.

One late thought about the Valve GabeCube is that I *was* mildly interested in the idea of a PC-ified Xbox as a thing to put under a TV, after the announcement of the Steam version I am negative interested in anything MS is planning.

The only thing I use windows for is games, so this might kill it.
