TFW your toddler grabbed the business end of a kitchen knife and you're still in flight or flight 30 minutes later. She's fine! The knife is dull I guess!

Only voting for whoever responds "sometimes I enjoy Nova."
after this many years of watching president grandpa get mad at whatever he sees on television i'm prepared to vote for whichever candidate can most snobbishly say "i don't even own a TV". the more they look down on the debate moderator for asking about it the better

I've been thinking a lot about that viral post "I don't know how to explain to you why you should care about other people." Like I get it and I understand why it felt so compelling at the time. But also, like, we should figure out how to explain that. I think it will be really necessary to do so.

We ... are? And if you're not in those networks, you may want to examine your choices and think about why.
1. If America were fascist right now, I would not be posting here. Neither would you.

Instead, I - and you - would be trying to build networks of people *offline* who can support and protect each other, in the dark, rather than yelling at the president and his stooges in our own names. /2

"Good thing I don't even use Spotify," I say smugly as I remind myself for the second time today that I can't go to Starbucks because of the boycott.

I know this is objectively funny, but it's making me so mad right now. This is terrible parenting! Please teach your children that experiencing sadness, anger, frustration, etc is not something that needs to be avoided at all costs.
Probably one of the best replies I’ve ever gotten to date. Very simple to stop a toddler from crying, simply figure out logically what they might cry about and avoid it.

evergreen statement
I think what I’ve realized is that our culture doesn’t actually care about the safety of children in any meaningful way. Instead children can be used as the ultimate “helpless” class that need to be defended when that defense is politically advantageous for other reasons.

Sweeps are violence and it really is that simple. If you live in Portland and have a heart in your body please take the time to testify in person/zoom tomorrow or in writing and ask our city council to reroute money away from sweeps, which do not reduce homelessness. www.portland.gov/council-cler...

There are a lot of Portlanders who consider themselves progressive but turn reactionary when they see visible poverty.

The urge to just make poverty disappear from sight instead of working toward holistic solutions is why we don’t have nice things in this country.

Poverty is a social creation.

Look all I want is for my city councilors to read my email, agree that the idea I have is brilliant, fast-track it, and give me public credit and perhaps naming rights. I feel like that's not too much to ask?

People can't read and everyone is walking around already incredibly overstimulated and distracted by the dozens of screens and sounds we're subjected to moment by moment.
ever since I learned about three-cueing I've developed infinitely more patience for replies on social media. mfers literally do not know how to read. people are walking around conjuring random meanings into words they don't know, and they don't know a lot of words. it's crazy

We’re seeing increased and aggressive ICE activity across the Portland metro region — including around sensitive locations like schools.

Save the PIRC hotline on your phone and call/text if you witness ICE activity: 888-622-1510
Cesar Chavez School and George Middle School have implemented the PPS's “secure the perimeter” protocol amid reports of ICE activity in the neighborhood.

Preschool for All will offer free preschool to ALL families in Multnomah County by 2030. We cannot depend on unreliable federal funding or shrinking state programs.

That’s why the Multco Board is ensuring PFA implementation is on-time and building a stable tax-base.

A nice thing you can do for kids in your neighborhood is have one candy available on halloween that doesn't have any allergens in it. You can check by seeing if any allergens are listed on the label, if they're not you're good. Usually fruit candies are a good choice.

Oh man, I have been in the "plaintiff's haven't argued it" position so many times. I had to argue for a summary judgment against a party who didn't show up and the amount of times I wanted to whine "but your honor, they're not even heeeeeeere."
Judge: I know we're in govt shutdown. Would Guardsmen—who have other jobs, right?—get paid?

DOJ: My understanding is that they will be paid by federal govt, but not sure about timing of payment.

Judge: Could that constitute irreparable harm?

DOJ: Don't think so! Plaintiffs haven't argued it

It is not acceptable to quote random people in eastern Oregon as if their knowledge on the situation in Portland is in any way comparable to the many, many experts who have spoken out against this deployment. (And there is a Parenti quote for every occasion and I intend to find and use them.)

I also hope we don’t forget all the local folks who’ve spent years spreading the “portland is a hellhole” narrative to gain short-term political power and/or social media clout.

They provided ammo to the Trump machine. They fed the false narrative and now the chickens are coming home to roost.

The “stay home” rhetoric from the mayor isn’t ideal, but we can’t give Trump what he wants, a city resembling a war zone. Instead, we’ll make a greater impact by directly assisting our immigrant neighbors. We can make ICE work for their deportations force them to go door-to-door.
