The new series of The Assembly dropped on ITVX at the weekend, starring David Tennant and Danny Dyer.

Here’s an article I wrote last year about the show’s format and portrayals of autism on screen.

Telly is weird. As an autistic person, I’ve never felt wholesome

You can tell when a woman on a dating app is autistic, mainly because her bio tends to read like a description on a cat rehoming Facebook page

This is madness.

All books by Normal People and Conversations with Friends author Sally Rooney set to be withdrawn from sale.

The 34-year-old Irish author says: “The disappearance of my work from bookshops would mark a truly extreme incursion by the state into the realm of artistic expression.”
Sally Rooney books may be withdrawn from UK sale over Palestine Action ban, court told
Rooney has said she intended to use royalties from her work "to go on supporting Palestine Action."

This is so good. This is me not meeting the criteria only because I get along well with people and have friends, and my trans son undiagnosed for the same reason. The conventional wisdom is that you can't have a high EQ and be autistic, largely because the conventional wisdom is based on cis men.

Thank you to those who sent something to my Kofi yesterday. Am trying it out, for now.

Don’t know if it’s something about not being from a creative family, a class thing or the fact I work other jobs, but I feel like me being paid for my writing is ridiculous. It’s why I’m so resistant to pitch.

I fully appreciate this is quite an open ended question, but what the actual f**k is wrong with the Home Office? How devoid of the most basic humanity do you have to be to do this?

This should read by all health care providers. Assumptions around autism,* especially autism in women are often outdated, wrong, shaming and harmful.

*as this applies to other conditions (ie mental health issues) it’s a good reminder to always try to centre a patient and their experiences (1/2)

Amazing, really, that there are still people who think writers can’t be autistic. I mean, “caring enough about something to spend years thinking about it for little or no money” is your first clue right there…

This is so well written, and heartfelt, I can only say that you should read it right now. Also, Lorraine Kelly and Shania Twain. 🤔

Excellent writing once again.

I know this was only part of what's discussed here, but I was told by a friend, who should know better, that autistic people can't be writers. Which is bizarre because Matt Haig, Laura James, Elle McNicoll and countless others would no doubt disagree.

While it hasn't happened to me yet, "having my diagnosis questioned by a doctor I've never met who half-remembers reading some horrible headline somewhere" has sat firmly on the already long list of worries I have about medical appointments for a while. We're going backwards.

So much of this resonated uncomfortably well -- but especially this line:
'In the end I found the report itself generally underwhelming, like being handed a voucher nearly half a decade out of date.'

... speechless. Put into words something I have felt since I was diagnosed mid-twenties as well.

Did a thing that I haven't done in months, which is get up in the middle of the night to write.

The discipline is another thing, but when you feel it inside you it's like leaping and running along for miles. I feel like l've been somewhere, by the end of it.
