Wrote this piece for @newrepublic.com with Professor Brandon Marshall about how the overdose crisis is driven by poverty and how harm reduction measures get the blame for larger structural problems they aren't designed to fix. We need economic populism and economic justice.
Collective members Professor Brandon Marshall and Abdullah Shihipar write about viewing the overdose crisis as one driven by material suffering and explain that pursuing economic justice can have a real impact in reducing overdose deaths.

The Populist Approach to the Opioid Crisis Can Save Millions of Lives
The overdose epidemic is often framed as a public health concern. But what if we treated it as an economic crisis, which policy can alleviate?

This article is 1000% correct. We can’t actually achieve any of these goals without more staff. Friendly reminder that the last time we had this few staff it was 1967. We served 480 claimants per staff then. Now we have to serve 1800 per staff. This is not sustainable or even achievable. Period.

The new goal to cut the number of field office visits comes as the agency’s frontline locations have lost thousands of employees.

Don’t let the frogwater that’s boiling us alive let you skip over this: we murdered another country’s citizens in cold blood, and when their leader objected, we called him a drug dealer and cut off aid to his country. That’s freakish.
Petro objected to the US bombing a Columbian fishing vessel that had the emergency beacon on because they were broken down, that we subsequently bombed. One Columbian fisherman survived the attack.

This is the official US response to Petro's comments.

Under the Third Reich, most Germans generally lived in the law-bound normative state, while Jews and other disfavored people were victims of the arbitrary and violent prerogative state.

The dual state is characterized by the facade of normalcy obscuring the fact of an authoritarian state.
The “dual state” theory was invented to describe Nazis. The Supreme Court could take us there.

An easily demagogued population is a danger.
The belief that poverty and homelessness are about "individual choices" didn't arise on its own. It was manufactured through decades of messaging designed to protect the policies and interests that create mass precarity.

As this new poll shows, that propaganda campaign has been wildly successful.
