There is no “novel legal theory” about a third term, as some reporters are parroting. It’s not legal, and the idea of seizing permanent power isn’t a “theory,” it’s just what dictators do.

New in PN: John Roberts created a monster. It's about to eat him.

"After all, how can the rightwing justices expect a future president — particularly a Democratic one — to accept rulings limiting the exercise of their power from a Court that served as the judicial stooge of an aspiring dictator?"
John Roberts created a monster. It's about to eat him.
The Supreme Court faces an existential dilemma of its own creation.

There’s no such thing as A.I “art.” It’s a soulless amalgamation of plagiarised data. That is the antithesis of art.

Really weird watching a coup in real time from my desk at work, putting in my usual hours. In the movies, everyone is at home or on the streets protesting. Makes it feel surreal.

i think this should be factored into how states, counties, localities and hospitals respond to these executive orders. "we will investigate you if you teach DEI." okay, with what agents, specifically? with what state capacity?
NYT reported that the number of potentially affected agents is as high as 6k. The bureau has about 13.7k agents total
What a hideous headline. Folks calling the shots here are just corrupt banana republic trash.

I don’t think that’s ever happened before.

If you are a federal worker being offered a buyout, I would advise against taking it.

Of course, this is a personal decision for everyone and it’s your choice.

But these offers are a rush job. The legality is questionable and this admin does not keep to its word.

They aren’t firing for a reason.

Do you know why a president would do all the most evil and heinous shit via Executive Order? Because his party can't easily make it law. And if they can't make it law, they can't make it last.

Don't let anyone make you feel like this is The End. Do not let them demoralize you. Live to see them die.

i think people who complain about the language police are, by and large, just cowards. say whatever you want! no one is going to stop you. but people may judge you or even, if you say the wrong thing in front of the wrong person, pop you in the mouth. but that’s life!

not only was non-citizen voting common but the causal relationship between citizenship and voting was often reversed, that is, voting was how a non citizen *demonstrated* their commitment to the political community such that they could become citizens
A real mindfuck that threw me for a loop for a while is that non-citizens voting in US elections was fairly common and uncontroversial in the 19th century.

To the extent you had to do anything at all, you maybe had to sign something declaring your *intent* to become a citizen.
like at the time the Constitution was written the immigration law was "you have to get your own boat here if you want to be an american; we won't send one to pick you up." honestly if they had enough boats i think they would have been in favor of picking the immigrants up with them

Costco pharmacy is selling single dose levonorgestrel emergency contraception ("morning after pill") for $5.99 per dose. This is a product with a fairly long shelf life and they don't seem to mind selling it to people who clearly don't need it. No prescription needed.
