My Taylor Swift essay for Zona Motel is out today! I'm examining what being an English teacher means in pop culture and why Taylor might want to incorporate that into her brand 👀
COLUMN: The Book-Object, "Why Does Taylor Swift Want to be Our English Teacher?"
considering the aesthetics of the English teacher as wielded by the pop star

My dog licks my ear with such authority, muscling his way onto my chest out of nowhere, standing there with his paws on my sternum like “EXCUSE ME BUT THIS IS FOR YOUR OWN GOOD”

It’s an exciting time for me— my old body wash has been discontinued and I am auditioning three new brands. Anyone could be the winner. I’m living on the edge of discovery

I can’t imagine this site without the trans community who have often lent support to me as a disabled person despite the challenges and prejudices they’re forced to endure. I LOVE YOU ALL. You are valid and precious 🙏🏼♥️🙏🏼

reminder: one week to #wolfenoot 2025
Today is Wolfenoot (wolf-uh-noot), a holiday invented in 2018 by a 7-year-old boy in New Zealand.

On this day, "the Spirit of the Wolf brings and hides small gifts around the house for everyone. People who have, have had, or are kind to dogs get better gifts than anyone else."

I should add that becoming more like the political parties that your voters hate is not a good way to keep your voters. Which is why after nearly thirty years of voting Labour, I’ll be switching to the Greens or Lib Dems.

When we say something is unbearably beautiful what we mean is that we do not have the capacious heart of the bear to appreciate it
Bears are often seen pausing to take in breathtaking views, hinting at a possible sense of beauty. In the wild, they've been spotted sitting silently for long stretches, gazing at sunsets, lakes & mountains. Not hunting, not moving, just watching.

I wrote a lil post about a poetry book I first read in 2010, and then reread again just this week. Like everything, it ended up being about arts in late capitalism! Here, if you're interested -- open.substack.com/pub/sadrevie...

Why do white people use skin color emojis that are not their own skin color???? Baffling! Strange! Do they think this counts as being “inclusive”?

Found the tweet that Joyce Carol Oates bodied Elon Musk with and it's so beautiful in its eloquent, simple take down. So much so he's crashing out trying to prove he reads books now. Put this in the Louvre.
