I am thankful that my institution didn’t comply in advance. Even if we are getting sued now. Rita Levi Montalcini lost her position in Italian university because of Benito Mussolini racial laws. Something that came to mind as an Italian-born scientist this morning.

Even if these belligerent policies and rhetoric were magically reversed, and we all said "Oops, sorry about that", it will be a long time (or some serious heavy lifting) before any country takes us seriously as a reliable partner again.

Concentrating so much power in the executive makes the system unstable and presidential elections life or death affairs, which is bad on its own. The most recent non-Trump presidents have had enough respect for norms to not tip over the entire apple cart, but it's Mad King Season now. 6/x

Liberal democracy is good for business. If we were still a liberal democracy, Congress would not be beholden to a Mad King and have shut down this trade war nonsense before it got off the ground. We won't fix our economic problems until we address our democracy problems 1/x
