Setting aside the obvious here, the reason Russia supplies low cost energy to neighbours is to prevent the emergence of alternatives and to create dependencies they can later exploit.

It's harder to push back on the demands of a country that can switch off your factories and winter heating.
Trump: "Russia wants to see Ukraine succeed. It sounds a little strange but President Putin was very generous in his feeling toward Ukraine succeeding, including supplying energy, electricity and other things at very low prices."

No one has ever been able to adequately explain what Putin is meant to have thought NATO expansion would threaten him with, apart from limiting his expansionist ambitions.

"He was worried they'd invade Russia."

No he wasn't.

He just wasn't.

That's not a thing anyone thought might happen.
this is the simple answer to people who keep saying NATO expansion matters. Sure, it matters because it presented an obstacle to Russian imperial ambitions. Putin didn't invade because he hated NATO expansion, he hated NATO expansion because he wanted to invade

spät, aber doch: die alljährliche Grenzen-Weihnachtsfolge vom
@moserat.bsky.social und meiner Wenigkeit.

An incredibly shallow piece that doesn't even begin to engage with the real questions: what would the European position be for such talks and how do you get Putin to start caring what we say?

Endless substance-free recycling of 'diplomacy is necessary' has been the bane of our policy towards Russia
Macron is right: Europe should talk to Putin
This will no doubt inspire fury in some quarters, at the v thought of talking to Putin, but if Europe doesn't, then it is handing all the initiative to Trump. My take for the @thespectator1828.bsky.social blog

Macron is right: Europe should talk to Putin
There is a quietly emerging sentiment in Europe that simply shunning Putin as a bad man is simply not working.

It is really quite striking that Witkoff sounds 100% like the German advocates of Nord Stream and business deals with the Kremlin as a bridge to peace and stability.

With the only difference that those doing the deals are now supposed to be Americans not Germans.

This is one of the biggest issues Austria is facing, and literally everyone is doing a deer-in-the-headlights over it here. The whole entrepreneurial framework in Austria is built around being able to be lazy about everything and simply be Germany’s friendly main supplier.
It's why "woe is VW/BMW/Siemens/Bosch" etc pieces about the problems with German industry are misleading. The big German firms long ago became EU-wide corporations. They'll adapt and do fine.

It's much of the traditional vast network of German supply firms that is screwed.

There are many dynamics to Germany's industrial woes, but one of the most important is how big German manufacturing corporations ascended to become truly Europe-wide operations at the expense of their traditional German suppliers, who are often no longer competitive with rivals in other EU states

Twitter pays people based on engagement (views, retweets, comments, etc). It appears that many MAGA accounts are based abroad and they use AI technology to generate low-effort rage bait.

My guess is that this will get worse as AI tech improves. For instance, fake videos of minorities doing crime.

The bus is important, troops no longer rely on bulky military trucks to transport infantry and UAV crews and something smaller, faster and more agile is needed. The bus provides good mobility
