Surprising find near the trap: a wooden oar with incised decoration that had been brought up the 4500-ft-tall mountain. (Pic of it and a cute axe-shaped brooch in link.)🏺🧪

Well done @boothicus.bsky.social for being one of the voices of reason in this.

I have to say, this bit of research, the ethics of it, left me feeling pretty queasy.

Also, once again, massive media coverage before publication of the actual data. Sigh...

Today we found something magical, deep in the wild green heart of Sumatra: Rafflesia kemumu in full bloom. One of the world's largest flowers, to see this extremely rare species in full bloom is truly special.

This is a green anole. (File under: Who You Gonna Believe? Me or Your Lyin' Eyes?) They can morph to brown — or this fetching mottle — for camouflage or heat regulation. It usually takes about a minute after they leap from leaf to porch railing to floor, and it's fascinating to watch.

There were 20 or more in a field behind our house last night. They like to eat what is left of the soybean field after the harvest. They come into town during hunting season and when the crops are harvested, hiding places are concentrated after harvest.

I picked up my camera bag after taking some photos of mushrooms and discovered that an ensatina (a kind of lungless salamander) had crawled under the bag!

It's the opposite of "the one that got away".
