The "LLMs are just fancy autocomplete" crowd has been wrong about basically everything, but they have been very successful at getting people to ignore/downplay AI progress.

I still meet smart people who say stuff like "AI can't do basic math," meanwhile AlphaProof won a silver medal at the IMO.
