I named my fists John and Cage because you're not going to be doing anything for the next four minutes and thirty three seconds
I named my fists Chekhov and Gun because you know they're coming but you don't know when

There are three kinds of people:

People who learned what felching is from the Nuzzi story

People who learned what felching is because they had to enforce AOL chat TOS rules in the 90s and received the infamous “words no one is allowed to say here, ever, srsly” training doc

Happy people

All the talk about Nuzzi made me wonder what ol’ Hugo S has been up to lately, and *of course* he started writing pieces for The Federalist.

What’s interesting is that this idea — “Each nation has Its People and Its Faith and if you don’t Belong you shouldn’t expect to be treated as human” — is the thread running through modern neo-nazi and white supremacist admiration for Israel despite their hatred and suspicion of Jews in America.
This is the Turning Point USA spokesperson responding to a recent Islamophobic assault against students at the University of South Florida’s Muslim Student Association where several men associated with Warriors for Christ spit on students praying and waved bacon in their face.

This is what I mean when I say that AI (generative AI, at least, the dominant branch rolling around today) creates *artifacts* but does not *do the underlying work* in the way that a human does. Sometimes that is okay, but misunderstanding what’s happening is a trap.
The value of knowledge is in having done the work. The value of research is in having done the research. The value of a summary is in having summarized the information. The value of writing is in having done the writing.

a good question to ask when someone says that ai can do some particular task is, "are the artifacts produced by that task what I desire, or are they just the evidence that the task has been performed?"

today, most genai solutions faithfully generate plausible artifacts without the invisible work.

the embarrassment of realizing that the rest of the folks in r/datahoarding us “Linux ISOs” as a euphemism

But then… what happens when you want to set up a historical VM? To simulate 1998 era PHP shared hosting? Then you DO need Linux ISOs!

One of the challenges when talking about LLM based AI tech is that subtle nuances — like the difference between “shortening” a document and “summarizing” it — are actually very important to unpack and understand, but sound like fussy nitpicking.
#LegalEthics Tidbit: OK, #AI is not reliable for legal research. But it’s really good at accurately summarizing documents, right? RIGHT!?

One of the hard but gratifying moments this month: clearing out detritus of old hobbies I wish I had time/community for. Pushing a decade ago I 3D printed and painted a TON (like, a closet full) of terrain for tabletop RPGs. Castles, scifi spaceports, warehouses, sewers, villages…

I remember when this discourse hit the Evangelical church — the idea that church was “effeminate” and had to appeal to MANLINESS launched a wave of ridiculously, embarrassingly juvenile shit like braveheart viewings and boxing pastors. still visible today in the “christian masculinity” griftoverse
i think i would honestly find this whole discourse more tolerable if people simply said what they were actually saying, which is that they think the Democratic Party is too associated with femininity (and secondarily, with black people) and that they want to correct this
