if i've learned one thing from doing union stuff while also doing other forms of organizing, it's that you're better off with people you disagree with who are nevertheless trying to do the same thing as you than with people you agree with who aren't trying to do anything

Reminder:

SDNY "was running an active investigation into Jeffrey Epstein[’s] ... coconspirators. In January [2025], SDNY prosecutors were ordered to transfer the Epstein case files to DOJ headquarters in Washington, D.C. ... the investigation into co-conspirators has inexplicably ceased."

Among other things: Act like a winner, walk with your spine straight and your head held high, be personable but absolutely firm in your convictions, don't give off loser energy, never let Trump think you want something from him—make him want something from you, and, very possibly, be a New Yorker.

Not much left in that noggin, but "flatter the Mayor of NYC so he'll give you a building permit" is floating around in the puddle, right next to "the Wily Japanese are taking over".
Reporter: Stefanik has campaigned on calling Mamdani a jihadist. Do you think you’re standing next to a jihadist?

Trump: No… but she's out there campaigning. You say things sometimes in a campaign. You’d have to ask her about that. I met with a man who is a rational person.

The Olivia Nuzzi Comeback Is Everything Wrong With Modern Media
Olivia Nuzzi’s comeback isn’t a personal scandal story—it’s proof that today’s media rewards access, personality, and controversy more than ethics.

Your regular reminder - if you don’t want it in the paper, don’t put it in writing.
WHOA. The FBI was/is spying on a Signal chat for a New York immigration court watch group, claiming they were “anarchist violent extremist actors.”

Your reminder that the government is watching and don’t say anything in a big group chat you wouldn’t say on TV.

Man, if we can come out of this scandal with both Larry Summers and Jaime Dimon getting ostracized from polite society, that would be amazing.
Top JPMC execs were in constant contact with Epstein and were aware of his shady financials. Top staff at JPMC, reporting directly to CEO Jamie Dimon, closely supervised Epstein’s accounts. One even coached Epstein on how to sanitize his suspiciously large cash withdrawals.

Zohran Mamdani doesn’t make me, an American Jew, feel unsafe.

Having the Coast Guard, which falls under the Department of Homeland Security, decide that a swastika isn’t really a symbol of hate? That makes me, an American Jew, feel pretty damn unsafe.

Father Coughlin, the fascist radio priest, called up the same general, Smedley Butler--out of the blue--about doing a coup in Mexico Butler laughed in his face but he must have been wondering: What am I, the coup guy?
Past is prologue.

In 1933, during the Great Depression, a group of wealthy businessmen tried to overthrow the US government and install a fascist dictator to protect their own interests.

And everything that led to it feels way too familiar right now.

This is not a history lesson, it’s a warning.

We’re watching a shift where AI simulates the cohesion and reinforcement that used to require an entire online community. A single person can now build a complete parallel reality with nothing more than a prompt window. Which seems bad.

It is the architecture of disordered discourse, automated.

I think simple rules have utility and most of the time, edge cases are best handled with a “We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it,” approach. “Don’t say the n word” is a perfectly fine rule.

“What if saying it is the only way to defuse a bomb?”

Is the bomb in the room now?
I think suicide is in fact an excellent case study in why certain simplistic theories of normative ethics can't be right (I tend to a weird sort of virtue ethics cum social contract). It's a terrible example of how the world is just far too messy for 'rule -> action" approaches.
