Roman fresco from the Domus Fulminata, #OstiaAntica, AD 200-250. It depicts Odysseus in his ship.
The house was built c. 70-75 AD but altered c. 150 AD and c. 250 AD. Inside the west wall an iron sword was found, perhaps a building sacrifice.

This trio of headless figures were found at Vercovicium Roman Fort (Housesteads), Northumberland on Hadrian’s Wall.
They represent Matres or mother-goddesses carrying cups & fruits.
Roman military communities payed respect to local deities.

A team from Dartmouth College identified the Roman forts while carrying out an extensive remote sensing survey from western Syria to northern Iraq. The survey located 396 Roman forts. The forts are easily identified by their standardized square shape and size. #RomanFortThursday

Satala - Some remains of the walls of the rectangular #Roman #legionary #fortress survive, though much ruined. Their line can be traced on all four sides of the fortress that encompassed an area of 15.7 ha. Originally home to the 16th legio Flavia

Hakoinen castle dates to the medieval period. It was situated on a very steep-sided rock by the Lake Kernaala. The top of the rock is 63 metres above the water level. Some activity seems to have continued there until the 1380s. It had two parts and was dug. #HillfortsWednesday

Excavation and aerial survey suggest the presence of hundreds of roundhouses, indicating a huge prehistoric settlement at the site.

One of Dorset's less well known Iron Age hillforts is Coney's Castle near the wonderfully named village of Whitchurch Canonicorum

Despite being largely covered in trees it is well preserved, looked after by @nationaltrust.org.uk and has fantastic views

Castle Rock near Thirlmere. A probable hillfort site associated with Arthurian legend, i.e. the Castle Rock of Triermain, which is linked to King Arthur through Sir Walter Scott's poem, "The Bridal of Triermain", which popularized a legend about a castle located there.

Hillfort-loving ducks.
Definitely a first for #HillfortsWednesday - a skein of ducks who love Stanwick Camp so much that they deliberately mirror the shape of the earthworks beneath them as they fly over for a look. Slightly off on the extreme left, but otherwise a solid 9/10.
