‘You should read the great works of #literature,’ Tom said. ‘Dickens, Shakespeare, Tolstoy, for starters. I’ll lend you a few from my collection. Get you started.’

‘Have you any Austen, Brontë, or Eliot?’ I asked, running a finger along the books on his shelves.

‘No. Don’t read chic lit.’

Funerary altar of A. Egrillus Magnus, from a tomb near #OstiaAntica, AD 50-100, carved in marble.

From a tomb like the one that fronts the main road leading into ancient Ostia, which was Rome’s main port near the mouth of the Tiber.

Floor mosaics were laid in rooms flanking the square. Motifs were linked to commercial activities. Inscriptions name corporations of traders, ship-owners & entrepreneurs from Ostia & other significant trading communities.

The lawmaker presented the document to Abeis.

‘What’s this about?’ Abeis asked, his eyes narrowing with suspicion. He crushed the scroll in his fist. 'My people are governed by the strongest, not by written #law,' he growled.

'In Palmyra, the laws rule us,' Lady Bahria replied calmly.

Regina began to speak. Barates closed his eyes and listened. Her #language was musical, lilting, slow in parts, then rapid. Latin was briefer, it seemed to him.

When she fell silent, he opened his eyes to her frank scrutiny.

‘What?’ he asked. She shook her head.

I still prefer real maps - if I don't know where I am now, how can GPS tell me where to go next?

Dated 50-1 BC.

His first hint that he is mortal? A lesson that youth and beauty are temporary? Or that life involves pain?
