Good to see the problems facing our colleagues @britishlibrary.bsky.social being raised here by @hetanshah.bsky.social (of @britishacademy.bsky.social). If this had happened in France it would be considered a national problem to be urgently addressed! www.cityam.com/the-british-...
The British library is in crisis: why does nobody care?
The widespread indifference to the British Library's crippling cyberattack demonstrates a perilous failure to value the knowledge infrastructure vital for national prosperity

The levy on foreign students is an export tax. Has anyone in government wondered why countries don't usually impose export taxes?

At some point, it might be interesting to write a comparative account of the reception of Jason Stanley's 2025 speech and Philipp Jenninger's 1988 Bundestag speech.

Sometimes these days, I cannot escape comparisons (though not equations) between the SPD of the early 1930s and the current Labour party. The political context is wildly different, yet Labour's timidity, bureaucratic mindset, and inaction in the light of the rise of the far right are concerning.

It’s appalling the British Prime Minister
has not actively stood up for the BBC amid what is transparently not anything like a bias problem but a deeply petty nitpick of its periphery functions by partisan folk appointed by previous governments that hate the broadcaster

The BBC isn't perfect, but it belongs to Britain not Trump.

Political leaders across the UK must unite in defending its independence from the White House.

Compulsory team teaching on every module is perhaps the biggest ever threat to the quality of teaching in UK universities.

It causes chaos on the ground for timetabling, ruins course coherence and turns lecturers into permanent supply teachers. It is pedagogically incoherent… 1/

Much solidarity with professor Laura Murphy.

Can we now have an overhaul of the funding system so we don’t expose our research infrastructure to interference by foreign powers please? Thanks.

I am trying to write a column about the Tory deportations bill, how it got noticed 6 months later. It is mildly impeded by His Majesty's Opposition being unable to say clearly which parts of the Bill they published are their policy - and how much of it they have now ditched already or may ditch

Britain now has two major radical right parties. Thankfully they are competing for the same voters.
Almost nobody in the Cons Party or beyond it had noticed that the Shadow Home Secretary with two other frontbenchers and 5 backbenchers tabled a bill in May to deport 3 million people - stripping almost every pensioner, parent or nurse who did not take out citizenship of their right to live here

Honestly what is the point of a Labour government that won’t take a stand against mass revocation deportation of people with permanent settlement rights?

If you won’t stand against anything you stand for nothing.
Worth saying that despite asking for more than 12 hours we’ve had nothing back from Labour on this
A Conservative MP tipped as a future party leader has been condemned for saying large numbers of legally settled families must be deported, in order to ensure the UK is mostly “culturally coherent”.
