Lung transplant dietitian - Big fan of Mary in a protestant way - Nutrition support, organ transplant, and malnutrition nerd - Healthcare, food, and housing are human rights, obviously - All opinions are my own - he/him 🍉 - 🥖🍷 - 🏳️‍🌈

About me!

I am interested in clinical nutrition, espcially critical care and transplant nutrition.

In my free time I am also interested in bioethics, political theology, and Anglicanism.

In my other free time I also bake, hike, play video games, and watch rugby.

Looking forward to connecting.

The CDC is removing data sets that researchers widely rely upon because they include information on sexual orientation and gender identity. “It feels like they’re trying to will us out of existence,” one researcher tells @theresagaff.bsky.social:

okay i’m finally experiencing the “their prealbumin is low they need more protein!” demands for the first time and i genuinely don’t know how to explain to a team of surgeons why i am not surprised to see a low prealbumin in someone 2 weeks s/p a double lung transplant

very disappointing to see dietitians on instagram promoting raw dairy but i guess it was only a matter of time especially when this persons whole vibe is “balancing hormones” which is *narrows eyes in suspicion* at baseline

this particular “do you own research” protestant reformation style thought regarding medicine, nutrition, and health in general is, genuinely, going to be the downfall of this country.

apropos of nothing, one of the most important things any of us can do to resist fascism is to refuse to comply early.

this means a lot of things, like not selling out your vulnerable neighbors, and not acting to aid the regime.

it also *very crucially* means not abandoning hope.

very blessed to be inpatient and protected from the worst of this sort of thing, but the misinformation surrounding health, wellness, and nutrition that is going to get worse in the next four years is going to be really annoying for dietitians specifically and healthcare generally

What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders?

The amount of everyday folks I’ve talked to who are convinced alcohol on its own is calorie free and it’s just mixers that contribute to weight gain is wild and they’re always very disappointed when I break the news to them.
What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders*?

Metabolism refers to the building up & breaking down of compounds by the cell/body & the kinetics of these reactions. Metabolism ≠ body wt regulation.

*Outsiders= everyone who asks you abt weight loss when you say you study metabolism
What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders?

Food systems are the #2 contributor to climate change, the #1 driver of deforestation, the #1 driver of biodiversity loss on land, and the #1 user of freshwater.

(It follows that food systems contain many solutions to these problems.)

Europeans don't fluoridate their water, but they fluoridate salt, milk, and other products. Scandinavian countries give children fluoride rinses and tablets. So when someone like Leana Wen just casually drops "Europeans don't fluoridate their water," she is simply revealing her own ignorance.
