Teaching thing I find useful: if a student stops showing up for class, make the subject line of your email "Is everything OK?" When people are overwhelmed they'll often avoid even opening bad-news emails (cf. me & my bank statements). This way, they know I'm reaching out to help, not chastise.

i spent a little while going through the AIDS quilt and picked out a few panels that stuck out to me for one reason or another. may the memories of all these beautiful, far too young souls be a blessing.

there’s a scene in the new documentary where Elizabeth Taylor is talking about the stigma of AIDS and how she got involved in the movement and it’s fucking everything

All 50,000 panels of the National AIDS Memorial Quilt has been fully digitized.

You can search Duane's name and see the panel he made. And someone else made a panel for him, too.

Also, to be clear, when a trans instructor at OU is being punished and targeted for quite fairly grading a terrible essay, it’s bizarre to see academics online debating the rubrics.

That’s…not the problem.

Look, there is no way to avoid TPUSA. You can give trolls a C-, B, B+. It won't matter. They can even get an A overall but if you give the feedback the very constructive OU instructor did, you're on the list. The assignment could be 2% of the grade (it might be in that class!). There is no defense.

Misconception: rare books = incunabula, 1st editions, fancy provenance, etc. Special collections also build tomorrow’s archival record today!

Here are some examples of recent acquisitions from The Gallery Press---our stewardship today ensures tomorrow’s researchers have access to small press works!

Please don't let the fear of not doing something well stop you from trying it for the first time. Write a messy story. Paint a crappy flower. Whittle the worst wooden bear of all time.

The best gift you can give yourself is to have fun and grow.

If you've ever wondered about the different kinds of clothing worn by the card players in Caravaggio's painting, 'Art in America' is featuring an extract about it from my book.

Rosencrantz: Do you think Death could possibly be a boat?

Guildenstern: No, no, no... Death is "not." Death isn't. Take my meaning? Death is the ultimate negative. Not-being. You can't not be on a boat.

R: I've frequently not been on boats.

G: No, no... What you've been is not on boats.

There is always some anxiety from my LIS students about finding a job.

This semester though... I've had more questions about the job market than ANY OTHER TOPIC...

What advice would you give new librarians, trying to find their first post-MLS job, in 2025/2026?

I find the phrase “makes history” nonsensical. Have you seen the stuff historians study? Just dropping an old piece of farm equipment down a well or accidentally freezing to death in a glacier gives you a good shot at the history books
