Conspiracy theories aren't limited to one political ideology. Anyone, left, right... even experts who study misinformation, can misjudge the legitimacy of a story. (Yep, scientists too 🫣.)

However, there are ways to protect yourself from getting suckered by pseudoscience and fake news. A long-ish 🧵
There's a weird left-QAnon thing starting up centered around dubious claims about the 2024 results popping up at the periphery of the internet. I feel like we're gonna hear more and more about this so just laying down my understanding of it now.

I think its basically a hoax.

Of so many things to be infuriated about, this is perhaps my biggest gripe. Pancreatic cancer patients, who face a future without hope, are being denied a potential game-changing therapy

In honor of world #CHD awareness day, I want to share my family story about a CHD called #hlhs. Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is a rare (1 in 3800) condition where a baby has a small left ventricle.

Nobody knows what causes hlhs but it accounts for 23% of cardiac deaths in the 1st wk of life. 🧪🫀

This also applies to mentoring people in Academia. The trees and the woods 🧪
I used to be a secondary English teacher, and did my teacher training 'on the job' through the Graduate Teacher Programme, back in 2006-2007. I remember, when I first started in the classroom, setting some written homework for a class of Year 7 boys. 1/n
It cannot be overstated how much hobby gamers underestimate how unintuitive and difficult hobby games are to non-gamers.

This is perhaps even more true of professional game designers, publishers and reviewers/pundits, broadly speaking.

Today was a big day for me personally. 🤩

I sent my 3rd & final #postdoc first author paper to my co-authors for approval before submission (most of which have already said 👍) AND...

I legally changed my name. Won't go into all the reasons, but this is meaningful & a bit aspirational.

MAHA logic: If toilet coke can’t kill ya, nothing can!

This is why kids don’t need vaccines?! 🤦🏻‍♀️🤬🫠

My quote of the day

Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science.

For #CHD awareness this week I want to highlight several types of 🫀 defects & some of what we know about them. 🧪

First up are ventricular septal defects, #VSDs. A VSD is a hole in the heart between the left and right ventricles. That's bad because it allows mixing of blood & that means less oxygen.

The first thing I wanted to post this morning is how that Bad Bunny halftime show could be used as a teaching tool in any American history course and then I saw this. Of course!
Not at all surprised to learn that Bad Bunny has a historical adviser. His halftime show was a reminder that our history and culture are deeply intertwined with the rest of the western hemisphere. We should think of his performance as part of #America250. #SuperBowl

Pop star Bad Bunny needed a Puerto Rican history scholar. UW–Madison had just the one.
Bad Bunny collaborated with UW–Madison history professor Jorell Meléndez-Badillo on Puerto Rican narratives that accompany the new album “DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS.”

I don’t have any Bad Bunny attire so I’m wearing my eagles shirt for the Super Bowl today. I know they’re not in it, I don’t care, it’s still go birds.

I absolutely love that Bad Bunny’s compromise with yt America is “you don’t have to learn Spanish, just learn to dance”.

🥲 Have you seen us?

You expect too much, sir.

This is one of my favorite optical illusions, because even when you know specifically HOW IT WORKS, it's still hard to make your brain believe it.

The image below is real-world video, but you're being tricked into believing it's an elaborate miniature by the DIORAMA EFFECT.

Let's talk about it.

The wheels fall off Democracy spinning round and round… 😵‍💫
We are locked in an infinite loop where the administration distracts from outrage over Epstein files by creating outrage over ICE excesses, and distracts from outrage over ICE excesses by creating outrage over Epstein files.

This is a unique way for a democracy to spiral towards oblivion.

My quote of the day

We have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces.
