I am so so sorry that Alice Wong has left. I didn’t know her well, but I knew her for a long time and had many convos - and her words, her advocacy, and her humor meant so much for so many. And in classic Alice fashion she generously left us all a note. Safe travels, @sfdirewolf.bsky.social. 一路走好

Alice Wong, writer and disability activist, has died. She was an educator and a communicator and a warrior who lit the way. I’m grateful to have crossed paths with her. Rest in peace.

Prohibited activities include advising Chinese graduate students. For reference, a recent Georgetown report estimated 16% of STEM graduate students in the US are Chinese nationals.

This would take out entire fields at the knees, which is perhaps the point.
“The prohibited activities would include joint research, co-authorship on papers, and advising a foreign graduate student or postdoctoral fellow. The language is retroactive, meaning any interactions during the previous 5 years could make a scientist ineligible for future federal funding.”

This applies to trying to help people who get SNAP, too. Donating money to a food bank is far more useful than donating food because food banks can buy in bulk and get what they know people actually need. (And recurring donations are a lot more useful than one-time ones, if you can swing it!)
Unless someone in the affected area has very specifically asked *you* for in-kind donations, remember that the most effective way to help disaster survivors is financial donations (with a preference for local organizations).
A THREAD on how disaster donations can be extremely harmful instead of helpful to communities experiencing a disaster.

I'll be using the movie Clueless to illustrate this issue but there is also decades of disaster research about this and plenty of first-hand accounts. #GreySky

Best metaphor I've heard is that using AI is like bringing a forklift to lift the weights at the gym. The point is to build YOUR muscles, not to make the weights go up and down.
I love to see stuff like this because it helps explain to people trapped in tech-sponsored information bubbles the actually obvious fact that universities teach people to know & think things, and AI is a way to produce the effect of knowing & thinking things w/o actually knowing & thinking them.
