As the Co-Chair of the DOTI Advisory
Board, I’ve spoken to many board members that feel the board was lied to by Director Ford. It’s incredibly disappointing that trust has been broken with the Board and with the public.
Denver scaled back a street safety project after pushback from the family of Colorado's wealthiest man.

While the city told the public that construction was the hold up, @spencersoicher.bsky.social obtained internal city emails showing the issue was "high level" community concerns.

What gets me about this choice is that this result of vast community outrage was so predictable. The city had finalized the project, it had 5+ years of planning behind it, and the Anschutzs are notoriously wealthy Republicans, Denver is deep blue.

Did they really think people wouldn’t cry foul?

@wesmars.bsky.social, a professor of civil engineering at CU Denver who wrote “Killed by a Traffic Engineer”, said that while the new design is an obvious improvement over the current Alameda Avenue, he isn’t convinced it meets the same standard as the original design.

The administration of Mayor Johnston and DOTI ignored 5 years of community input & betrayed the Wash Park neighborhood after a billionaire family hired a former DOTI staff member turned lobbyist. 800 people signed a petition this week to ask them to change it back.

I just had a similar experience going through the uptown neighborhood of Denver! I saw a traffic diverter with physical barriers and a bicycle filter! One block from my old apartment. Brings a tear to the eye. 🥲

The mayor is continuing his legacy of undermining trust when a 5 year community input process is reversed right after a billionaire family complains.
A scuttled road diet for Alameda Avenue has caused discontent within the advisory board for the city’s transportation department — including one resignation, with more possible.
At least one citizen advisory board member has quit over DOTI walking back its Alameda plans
Several advisory board members say they're increasingly concerned about the transportation department’s commitment to safety.
