A little eastern fox squirrel braving the cold in Illinois on this Squirrel Appreciation Day.
Though they don’t hibernate, they may sleep for several consecutive days in winter, utilizing leaf nests, tree cavities, or manmade boxes for sheltering and raising young.

In this cold weather, a fun thing to do for kids and adults is to bring some trees indoors. Take cuttings of small branches, put them in a warm place in some water, and watch what happens. Some trees will do nothing, but many, especially the early-flowering trees, are eager to show their stuff.

I didn’t want to get anyone’s hopes up until I had her in my hands, but look who made it to us after all.
Her new name is going to be Winter, in honor of how frickin’ cold it is, and a reminder that it’s always coldest just before a season of beautiful rebirth.
