My meeting today with a website client.
“Do you need me to create the images for the landing pages?”
“No it’s fine, I’ll get AI to do them.”
“OK, what about the copywriting for all the post and landing pages?”
“No it’s fine, I’ll get AI to do it.”
Downed tools and took the dog for a walk.

I attended this conference once years ago at MIT (so great, learned a lot) and I'm flabbergasted.

I really don't have words.
BREAKING: The University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University has reneged on their commitment to host the @sciencewriters.org annual conference and withdrew their entire financial support.

The National Association of Science Writers is now looking for a new venue, sponsors, and partners.

Took like 2100+ words to explain, but the TL;DR version is: it's unethical, it's a half-baked product (which I don't want to train), it guzzles too much electricity and water, and I'm still better😏https://deborahbeckwin.com/why-im-not-using-generative-ai/

Firings are happening right now at the National Science Foundation. Essential staff are being cut.

This isn’t about the budget. If it was, they’d be going after the military (17%) or state appropriations (38%). NSF is 0.7% of the federal budget. All federal employees make up only 4% of the budget.

I am so heartbroken. I got to know Elisa two years ago when she came to me with hundreds of emails of anti-trans legislators scheming around restricting trans rights. I helped get her story told by the New York Times and Washington Post. She deserved so much better.

RIP.
I'm sad to share that the trans vet that took her life outside the VA last week was apparently Elisa Rae Shupe.

She's someone many of us know - she was responsible for the mass email leak that let us know how the ADF, Heritage, etc planned to enact trans eradication we see today.

RIP Elisa.
