Politicians constantly claim that the government must “live within its means”, just like any family.

In this video, I explain why the household analogy is not only wrong — it is the foundation of austerity.

The Irish Times published and lauded John Collison's op-ed, but did they fact-check it?

Andrew Jackson did. Thoroughly.

If you spent time reading the original, you'd want to give time to this counterpoint as well.

We really, REALLY need to support our local (and rural) artists - my home would be a lot less pleasant without Ciara's art on the walls, and whatever I paid her for it gets spent locally.
Her work is both beautiful and reasonably-priced, and if you've deeper pockets, she takes commissions too.
Thanks so much Philip! Will be a tougher one this year I expect, so appreciate it hugely.

If 24 people are dead due to airstrikes, I think we're safe to assume that the ceasefire is not being "tested", but is "over" - if it ever started in the first place.

I have done a very great many exams in my life and have a decent alphabet soup after my name as a result. I am something of an expert on being tested. The ceasefire has failed. It has not passed the test. Israel remains a genocidal and barbarous state.

This, in a nutshell, is where we’re at. All the lies, the distraction, NGO-blaming and drive towards even further deregulation is to cover the naked fact that, in Ireland, big polluters pull the strings and our politicians just nod along.

Do you remember when Miriam Margolyes said she wanted Boris Johnson to die live on TV.

There was outrage.

Now it turns out Johnson wanted her and ALL the old people to die.

I think she needs an apology.

Of course, the government aren't fools, this is not a case of naivety but one of alignment of interests - wealthy investors benefit from gutting oversight and protections, and for the government it's a convenient scapegoat for their own decades long failings
