We refuse anything less as the destination. The future is one where every church is practicing and preaching the truth, the life, the freedom, and the blessing that is only reflected with full queer welcome, inclusion, affirmation, belonging, and leadership at every level.

Have the courage to say so. Have the willingness to exclude the intolerant beliefs and opinions while honoring the need to listen, learn, grow, influence, and teach. It's not about excluding individuals; it's about setting our doctrinal truth, our policies, our reason for being.

If Jesus said his disciples would be known by their love for others, then when we claim to follow him but we are known for our bullying, our mockery, our callousness, and our contempt for others, we are actively taking his name in vain.

Love must be our reputation.

In Ps.136:5 today: '[God] who by understanding made the heavens, for his steadfast love endures forever.' Understanding creates. Understanding creates more than can be seen. If we were more than the algorithms tell us to be, who might we become? Understanding is my work today.

In Ps.137:4: 'How could we sing the Lord's song in a foreign land?' Exile, said Bruggemann, is the experience of living in moral incongruence. Denying SNAP benefits. Tear-gassing neighborhoods. Yet I am here to sing the Lord's song of compassion & justice. Sing is my work today.

This substack has me reflecting this morning that the government shutdown is the polar opposite of Kairos (God-time). It is the opposite of living in holy space-time. Rather, our lawmakers hold, neither restful nor productive for the common good, abiding in demonic presence.

speak to our fearful hearts by conflict rent.
Save us, thy people, from consuming passion,
who by our own false hopes and aims are spent."

Food bank director: “for every meal that a food bank provides, the SNAP program provides nine. There’s no way we can meet that gap.”

As a Church leader for the past 20 years, this talk is cruel, wrong, and antidemocratic. Religious nonprofits are not a substitute for what we agree to do collectively in a democracy via taxes. We don’t have the capacity or infrastructure. We actually don’t want religions acting as FEMA. We can’t.
“Just go to a food bank, a church or a charity”

For every meal the food bank provides, the SNAP program provides 9.

Even if donations are rapidly scaled up, they won’t be able to meet the needs of 42 million Americans who are about to go hungry.

It’s not sustainable.

2/2 It’s easy to point to others & dismiss them as following false stories. The real work is asking: What false stories do I stubbornly hold as true? What teachers do I follow because they keep me comfortable rather than challenging me? How do I embody & share the good teaching of the Good News?
