Robyn St. Laurent: Why science funding matters more than you think

This is a list of blockbuster drugs in 2024. Guess how many can trace their origins to NIH funded research?
All of them.

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings.

But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.
Direct Economic Contributions
NIH directly supports the economy through investments in research institutions and job formation.

On changes to #NIH indirect rates, there is a law in place that prohibits NIH from making such changes without the approval of Congress. See Division D, Title II Section 224 of The Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024 (Public Law No: 118-47) grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%.

I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters.

My NIH study section that was to meet tomorrow was one of those canceled. This represents many months of work by the applicants and by the NIH staff and reviewers. Devastating is the correct word.
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

I can’t believe it snowed this much in Houston!! Thankfully we didn’t lose power this time unlike during 2021 snow storm. Stay warm everyone ❄️

Koreans often go watch the sunrise on January 1, preferably by the ocean or at the mountaintop, to make wishes on the first “light” of the year 🌅 There’s no real mountain near me (Houston problem lol) so I drove to Kemah this morning. Lucky it wasn’t cloudy.

Happy New Year everyone! 🥰
