A propos of nothing, long ago I got used to writing emails quite like letters because they could all be FOId due to my public roles - and I’m glad I retained the habit.

I am not a lawyer, just a historian, but one fundamental problem with the political debate about the EU, especially in English publications is that the whole principle of the acquis communnitaire is not understood or taken seriously. The EU is a framework of rules, not an alliance.

Absolutely this.
Whatever else comes out once the attack on the ECML train last night, this alone is a credit to the train crew, driver, and signalling team.

Huntingdon was the first possible stop. In a highly stressful situation and improvising a plan the train lost just 3 minutes vs line speed to get there.

Occasional reminder that Lemsip is a weird-tasting waste of money: drink hot water mixed with lemon and a spoonful of honey. Swallow two generic paracetamol tablets and, if you need decongestant, OTC pseudoephedrine hydrochloride (follow pack dosing). It’s cheaper overall and tastes much better.

📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms).

It’s also concerning. 1/
PSA: we're aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.

When a chatbot gets something wrong, it’s not because it made an error. It’s because on that roll of the dice, it happened to string together a group of words that, when read by a human, represents something false. But it was working entirely as designed. It was supposed to make a sentence & it did.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Remember this can also have some long-term consequences that are really serious. Certain diagnosis or medications can have implications on future employment as well as the ability to hold certain certifications and licenses. Getting your medical record corrected after this will be an nightmare

My friend Mark Mardell was chucked off his Turkish Airlines flight at the weekend because he had Parkinson’s and his son had asked for assistance for him. (He’s written about it as a public post on Facebook but the link is proving hard to share outside,)

Ugh…
Did you know that you can passively download malicious payloads onto target systems?

Lots of software caches images locally to save bandwidth, often without stripping metadata first.

You can leverage this functionality to download payloads.

I was a panellist at a techUK digital ID event yesterday, in a room of UK providers of identity solutions, and the vibe from them was that digital ID needs to be driven by convenience and consumer choice - needs to be easy to use by people who want to use it, when they want it.

It has been said: start an email with normal human pleasantries and only later get to your request for work.

But I say unto you: no, get your request into the first line so I can see it in the preview without having to click anything.

Today our report is published!

Another service provider is changing its Terms and Conditions to “bring us inline with other industry operators”. Isn’t that the opposite of what a free market should be doing? The opportunity to differentiate themselves by their offering? Race to the bottom?
