A new study finds over 70% of Illinois wetlands lost protection after the Supreme Court’s rollback of the Clean Water Act.

Floodplain forests—vital for flood control, water quality, and climate resilience—are most at risk.

Illinois needs to pass a state law protecting wetlands.

RIP, Gov. Edgar: A fine man, keen politician and a Republican backer of abortion rights who, by his own admission, would never win a GOP primary in today's climate.
Former two-term Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar, who led the state through much of the 1990s, dies at 79
Arguably one of Illinois’ most-popular governors, Jim Edgar, 79, led with a low-key persona a meticulous focus on fiscal matters aimed at preparing the state for the 21st century,

Podcast props #1: The gentlemen of 1988 Topps do fine work every episode, but this one stands out due to cohost @davidmcellis.bsky.social’s clear affection for the Sox & that champion 2005 squad. Credit is given where due; criticism when warranted. Williams proves a fascinating subject. Recommended!
This week, a guy best known as White Sox GM, it's Ken Williams! Kenny's mom was an early member of the Black Panthers and his father was on a relay team with John Carlos and Tommie Smith. In 2005, Kenny helped the Sox break their 88 year title drought!

Remembering Some Guys is possibly the most singularly wholesome, non-toxic activity many men engage in

you want to get dudes out of the fever swamps of the manosphere? get them together and start arguing about relief pitching
I mean this is literally a huge chunk of sports posting and half the time on this app it is immediately met with screaming about how sportball is for conservatives
One of my favourite things is when men in groups geek out about their shared interest or hobby so hard that they enter this state where they are all small boys again, unconstrained by toxic masculinity and masculine social expectations.

It’s rare to observe and it’s wonderful when it happens.

Before states banned abortion, one of the gravest outcomes of early miscarriage could easily be avoided: Doctors could offer a dilation and curettage procedure, which quickly empties the uterus and allows it to close, protecting against a life-threatening hemorrhage.
NEW: More women have nearly bled to death during miscarriage under Texas’ abortion ban.

Experts say the trend paints a troubling picture of the harms of unnecessary delays in care. “This is striking,” one doctor said. “The trend is very clear.”
A “Striking” Trend: After Texas Banned Abortion, More Women Nearly Bled to Death During Miscarriage
A new ProPublica data analysis adds to the mounting evidence that abortion bans have made the common experience of first-trimester miscarriage far more dangerous.

W.E.B. Du Bois on Robert E. Lee:

“Either he knew what slavery meant when he helped maim and murder thousands in its defense, or he did not. If he did not he was a fool. If he did, Robert Lee was a traitor and a rebel–not indeed to his country, but to humanity and humanity’s God.”

I’m particularly proud of this episode. What do Ken Griffey, Stan Musial, and the Clean Air Act have in common?

Donora, PA…and this episode of the 1988 Topps Podcast.
This week, the third best player from Donora, PA... Ken Griffey, Sr! The other two were Ken Jr. and his dad's teammate Stan Musial. Donora is also famous for a smog disaster. Griffey was a 3x All Star and 2x World Series Champ with the Reds.
