William Aberhart usually gets credit for being the first Alberta MLA to face the threat recall but that honour actually belongs to St. Paul MLA Joseph Beaudry and Taber MLA James Hansen.

love that Supercop #3 expects us to believe he had reason to believe a sitting MLA was engaged in flagrant corruption, conducted an illegal search — and then got distracted so never completed his investigation. Adorable.
In November 2018, Riddell looked up Phillips’s name from a computer in the police precinct’s short-term holding facility. He told ASIRT in a written statement that a confidential informant told him that Phillips had been “overheard bragging about having LPS ‘in her back pocket,’ and how she had ‘gotten out of being charged at some point,’” the report states. He told investigators he combined that with “previously overhearing the tail end of a conversation” with other officers that he surmised was about Phillips and a Lethbridge police matter, and that led him to look her up on the database. After his database query on Phillips, Riddell did not open any reports related to her. He told ASIRT in his statement “he believed he was distracted by some other tasks and abandoned the search.”

The lack of self-reflection in this op-ed by the board chair of the Better Edmonton Party says a lot about why the party lost the mayoral election. Even with a $2 million war chest and a big head start they couldn’t convince more than 30% of voters that Tim Cartmell should be Mayor of Edmonton.
