Remember: The oligarchs who control our economy and democracy seek to divide us so they can become more powerful.

They want us to turn on each other so we don't look up and see where all the wealth and power have gone.

Don't fall for it.

Researching this week's column, I stumbled across something that amazed me:
the near-absence of reliable data about climate impacts over most of the
world. Due to the rich world's failure to fund research. We don't know
because our governments don't care. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Climate sceptics tell us that more people die of extreme cold than extreme heat. What’s the truth? asks Guardian columnist George Monbiot

wearecreativeuk“The arts aren’t a luxury – they’re an export.”At the Cultural and Creative Industries Pavilion at #Lab25, filmmaker and satirist Armando Iannucci reminded us that the UK’s Creative Industries are not a side note - they are central to our economy and global identity.“The Creative Industries make up 6% of our economy and 7% of our workforce - that’s the GDP equivalent of the oil and car industries combined. If it were an AI system or a weapon system, ministers would be out all around the world trying to sell it.”Our creative skills, talent and studios are world-class, and it’s time they were recognised as such.🎥 Watch the Cultural and Creative Industries Pavilion Programme from #LAB25 through the link in our bio #CreativeUK #ArmandoIannucci #CreativeEconomy #CulturalIndustries

Self promo is my bane; it makes me feel like an immense tit when I post stuff about my writing (thanks to upbringing - never blow your own horn), but it is increasingly apparent that all it means is that I'm utterly invisible as a writer...

So, anyway.

I have books and stories out there.

Honestly, fuck those RW papers, they'll never hold a consistent stance if it means they can just be against something.

Awkward but also an interesting example of what happens/will happen when Reform get into power and have to reckon with the realities of (local) government
Some more awkwardness from Reform at local level:

Six months ago, Farage described doubling council tax on second homes as “madness”

North Northamptonshire, won by Reform in May, is now planning to do just that, say plans seen by @cjayanetti.bsky.social for PolHome
A Reform-led council is planning to double council tax on second homes six months after party leader Nigel Farage denounced the idea as “madness” and “extortion”

North Northamptonshire is expected to approve the measure on Tuesday, in plans seen by PolHome

My point here is not that crime, racism, terrorism, pollution etc were all worse in the 70s but that the period 1973-77 in particular was one of crisis, paranoia and hysteria. People were talking about Britain going bankrupt or collapsing into dictatorship. There was a national nervous breakdown

The nightmarishly surreal title sequence to SHADOWS OF FEAR (1970), ITV's incredibly nasty psychological horror/thriller anthology. Heavily reminiscent of Yellow Submarine, it's accompanied by Roger (Hammer House of Horror, George & Mildred) Webb's queasy cocktail jazz theme tune.

This is absolutely right. It’s about creating a permission structure for violence, whether that violence is conducted by the state directly or simply permitted by the state.
