These Ray Carney novels by Colson Whitehead are so unbelievably excellent. They're like classic gritty detective stories but about a furniture store owner in Harlem in the 60s-70s. Pepper is one of the great all-time badass characters of the genre. Can't wait for the 80s!

People with nothing at stake think political views they hold, even (especially) towards the left, are a matter of their superiority. People who have felt the boot on their neck or feel compassion for those endangered consider what they believe as something that matters so we can get what we deserve.

i have been head down on a post-production job putting in DAYS fueled on little else but the thought “i will buy a fairly-priced toyota corolla with this money” and i dunno but maybe that’s sort of a low stakes dream to be sidelining all my loved ones for the entire final 1/3rd of 2023 over?
