One time I met with a Salvo shelter director and she reacted with shock when I told her that people they didn’t let into the shelter slept on the street. She legitimately seemed to think that people they didn’t let in just…found a hotel, I guess? Idk. It was dangerously unrelated to reality.

When I was homeless in 2019, the Salvation Army shelter refused to give me a bed (even though they were available), because I was on immunosuppressant meds and they didn’t want to be responsible or liable if I got more sick or died on premises. They’d rather I die on the street.

Semiannual reminder that if the holidays are reminding you that you want to help your neighbors, pick a day and put it on your calendar. My homeless friends have told me that they could eat 30 free meals on Thanksgiving if they wanted to, but mid- February or March it all dries up!
