Was always inevitable Labour would need to move on youth mobility, and that would probably be part of an overall package. There's nothing else that's new in this long report, for ambition to remove SPS barriers doesn't make that happen...

Today I argue that the fusion of Big Tech and politics in the Tony Blair Institute is causing trouble for both The Royal Society and Keir Starmer.

Millions of research articles are absent from major digital archives. This worrying finding, which Nature reported on earlier this year, was laid bare in a study by Martin Eve, who studies technology and publishing at Birkbeck, University of London.
Act now to stop millions of research papers from disappearing
Digital preservation is not keeping up with the growth of scholarly knowledge. Recognizing its causes is the first step to securing records everywhere for future generations.

Excellent use of cursing as a discovery mechanism here.
Here’s a visualization of all the curse words in real time, which is oddly satisfying:

I'm honoured to have been asked to deliver the opening plenary at HESPA's Autumn Conference next week, and I can honestly say that it has been one of the most interesting presentations I've worked on for a long while.

If there are any HESPA peeps on BlueSky - I hope you like it!

This makes an alumnus very proud.
The @uniofexeter.bsky.social convened a panel to advise the university on how to use carbon offsets in its ambitious net zero target. Our conclusion is that all offsets should be ditched. We very much hope other universities will do likewise.

We have officially advised our university to ditch carbon offsets – and focus on cutting emissions
Your organisation should probably ditch offsets too.

Useful reflections on digital innovation diffusion. (I might pick this book up!)

PS GDS = Government Digital Service
I’m reading this on diffusion and it’s quite a useful way to think about public sector digital work.

You can think about internet-era methods as an innovation (for example, the idea of organizing work into outcome-based product teams). 1/n

This should be excellent news for access to Higher Education everywhere in England (not to mention about 101 other things). I already have a policy evaluation piece in mind for 2028.
As confirmed at Transport Committee meeting this week, Labour are adopting a new (+better) approach to bus funding

Many areas were disappointed by the previous bidding process (getting no or little investment), so this cash will make a big impact in some communities

Bodes well for the CSR
STORY

Buses will get a £1billion boost in plans to be announced on Monday.

Will be distributed based on need, population and levels of deprivation...rather than making local areas waste time and resources on competitive bidding wars

Wonderful clear, educational dataviz setting the COVID-19 pandemic in its historical context.
Here's the full chart: A timeline of pandemics.

Historical knowledge of past pandemics is sparse. Pandemics with an unknown death toll are shown as triangles, while pandemics with an estimated death toll are shown as circles.
