🚀 Huge step forward for decarbonising heat: Construction has started on world’s largest seasonal thermal energy storage facility in Vantaa, Finland.

Massive underground caverns will store 1.1m m³ of hot water — around 90 GWh of heat, enough to warm an entire town through winter.

The cost of living crisis was caused in large part by gas prices.

Heat pump policy supports a solution which which gets the country off gas AND reduces emissions.

I seriously hope this is some crossed wires, if not we really are in trouble.

How much carbon budget do we have left if we want to stay below 1.5˚C?

Just 2 more years at current rates. It is essentially impossible to avoid global temperature rise exceeding 1.5˚C.

A reminder: energy isn't just electricity.

Many countries have done well to decarbonise the tip of the energy iceberg - electricity.

The hard bit is what's below the tip of the iceberg - heat, cooling and transport.

I’ve just announced I’ll be leading a National Emergency Briefing on 27 November . At a time when climate is in free fall on the political agenda , it’s vital our leaders realise what is at stake if we do not accelerate a just , green transition for all .

I believe media can attend by arrangement?

It's not every day that both poles set new monthly temperature records (see my earlier post). Last month also observed the warmest October on record for the #Arctic Circle. Not great!!

Really good to see this research published by @globalactionplan.bsky.social, Ricardo and @hertscc.bsky.social today. Domestic combustion is a major source of fine particle pollution in the UK, and this new research shows we could save the NHS more than £54m a year if unnecessary burning was stopped.
BREAKING: Our research with Ricardo and @hertscc.bsky.social reveals that air pollution from burning in the home contributes to nearly 2,500 deaths across the UK each year.

Check out the Guardian's coverage of our research: www.theguardian.com/environment/...

Use of wood-burning stoves and fires in homes is mostly unnecessary and their toxic pollution costs the NHS millions

For years, there's been a massive over-emphasis on food miles, and a massive under-emphasis on food type.
By far and away the best dietary decision you can make, for environmental, humanitarian and public health purposes, is to cut out animal products.

Agree with the general argument on this. But recently a plan to link up the UK with solar in morroco(x links) was well under development (awarded significant infrastructure status by gov) this was fully privately funded and still offered a good price on the energy)
One thing is clear: renewables don’t fit within the political economy of neoliberal capitalism.

We have to choose between the profits of oil producers, and the health and prosperity of entire societies. But our politicians
care more about the former than the latter.

This is a good corrective to the BS narrative flowing through the Pielke/AEI/NYP/EID/DOE nexus. Their argument is designed so that we can never ever attribute extreme events to emissions - even singular events that would have *never* [for some suitable finite approximation] have happened before.
