The tl;dr for writers is — we are human, we write the books, and we are going to fucking win.

Open up this picture fully.

Then look at the surface of Mars.

Then look up to the top right.

Spot Mars' moon Phobos high in the sky.

Then notice the bright spot beside Phobos.

That's Earth.

Kaleb Horton wrote one of the most powerful things I’ve ever read about memory and nostalgia.

Memory & Nostalgia
Nostalgia is a drug that eats memory. It kicks in right after you say the word remember, and when it works it starts flooding you with warm and pleasant lies. It’s insanely addictive. Works fast. Ever...

"I seek a cure for an ill loved one. She has little time."
"Is she your daughter?" Aeryth asked.
The elf turned her head and though the sun was shining, her face was now in darkness.
"She is my world." Aeryth thought this a metaphor. Then the necromancer spoke.
"Equinox," said he.
"Dusk," said she.

This week on the blog! We are talking Tolkien, particularly his moral vision, by a study in contrasts of 'failures' - and why Celebrimbor falls whereas Boromir 'conquers' (and how Peter Jackson gets this right, but Rings of Power gets it wrong).

Collections: Why Celebrimbor Fell but Boromir Conquered: the Moral Universe of Tolkien
This week (and probably next) I want to talk a bit more Tolkien, but in a somewhat different vein from normal. Rather than discussing the historicity of Tolkien’s world or adaptations of it, …

November 15, 2021. A new dwarf planet has been discovered in our solar neighbourhood. It was given the provisional name Xipe Totec.
It has gone unnoticed due to its small size and complex orbit, but it recently passed close enough for this first image to be captured.

OpenAI is completely screwed. If they're losing money on $200/month, they're losing it on $20/month and their real costs are so much higher than they can ever get anyone to pay. A pale horse.

Anything worth doing is worth doing badly. Lower. The. Bar.

For me, the barrier to ANYTHING is just inertia, so if I want to do something, I lower the bar until it feels silly not to do it. Run 1 min. Do 1 dish. Clean for 3 mins. Write 1 sentence. Practice for 3 mins.
Ok wait

What’s your best, most impactful, small habit that you’ve embraced that you like and would recommend to others?

Trying to explain why Mario 64 is a special game in way its predecessors fail to capture is so hard.

I keep saying things like "Tony Hawk is the actual successor to Mario 64", but maybe it's the other way. Maybe Mario 64 is a skateboarding game.

imagine if people went to retailers and just took stuff and called it "generative shopping" and then, when the retailers said that's illegal, people said "regular shopping is too expensive so we have disrupted it" and then the retailers were like "OH! Carry on, innovators!"
