HAPPENING NOW: Portland Police Commander Franz Schoening testifies that federal officers on Oct. 18 barraged protesters with crowd control munitions — not because of any violence but because another federal officer accidentally shot tear gas onto the roof of the ICE facility.

BREAKING: A federal judge in Massachusetts (the Reagan-appointed William Young) has declared the Trump administration's cuts to NIH grants — ostensibly over Trump's EOs on gender ideology and DEI — are "illegal" and "void." He's ordering many grants restored.

P.S. State and federal charges are not mutually exclusive under the dual sovereignty doctrine (and it looks like MN is seeking charges). Personally I think state has greater interest here and should go first
Boelter is apparently facing federal charges. Which opens to door to a presidential pardon if convicted (if not before). There should be a state prosecution here to make sure justice actually gets served (and so evidence re motive is not selectively presented to conform to predetermined narratives)
holy shit -- acting US attorney Thompson details that Boelter went to the homes of two other elected officials after shooting Hoffman but before going to Hortman's house. One cop encountered him at the third house but thought he was a police officer.

Blocking Nazis, trolls, and fascists doesn’t make it an “echo chamber.” People need to stop gaslighting us into thinking we have to listen to Nazis and debate trolls in order to be informed.

In light of the recent arrival of the first wave of WHITE South African immigrants to the US the other day, today’s #AltCitizen is Nelson Mandela. The first Black President of South Africa, Mandela was instrumental in not only ending apartheid, but also in giving Black people a voice. 🧵/1

New in PN: Maine fought the law, and Maine won

"After weeks of public fulminating, the administration quietly folded and quit trying to steal kids’ lunch money for the grievous sin of letting a couple of trans girls play sports. It’s a reminder that Trump, like any bully, can be fought and beaten."

The dissolution of the CDC continues, with agency-wide reorg plans due today. The remains of many Centers that were heavily impacted by recent cuts will be absorbed into the new “Administration for a Healthy America”, which gives us shivery Orwellian vibes.

CDC officials plan for the agency’s splintering, but questions remain
Several parts of CDC — devoted to health threats that aren't infectious — are being spun off into the soon-to-be-created Administration for a Healthy America.
