You've probaly seen various headlines this year about bird flu and the potential for a new pandemic.

So I've written a new substack as a simple explainer on what a flu pandemic actually is, why bird flu and what's been going on over the last 3 years.

How close is a new bird flu (H5N1) pandemic?
Probably not around the corner but getting uncomfortably closer.

Photoreceptors are proteins in trees that interpret light to influence tree physiology, growth, and development

In short, it helps identify what season it is

It also means our trees kind of know if I am wearing a red or blue shirt

The lake just below the seven springs at Springhead in North Dorset.
The springs are fed by water from the nearby chalk downlands.
The clarity of the water, even in midwinter, is astounding.

Yes, to suspire is to utter a deep sigh. It’s all about breath, as are ‘inspire’ (to breathe life into an idea/person), ‘expire’ (breathe out), ‘perspire’ (to breathe through), ‘conspire’ (to breathe together), and ‘spirit’, because the ancients believed the spirit was breathed into the body.
Is that like perspiring? so can you suspire?

So pleased you got to see the exhibition.

Whixall stone is a really important piece especially given its findspot on a low ridge which probably marked the extent of the moss, or edge of the farmed landscape. Potentially a standing stone acting as way-marker. More here:
