Ever since his childhood visits to Kensington Gardens, Paul Nash had been drawn to trees - they held a spiritual quality for him. The tranquillity in this work from 1911, is heightened by the inclusion of birds which he saw as an emblem of freedom.

H E Bates on rivers - writing in 1937.

It is not merely a volume of water travelling on a set course from one point to another. It has become a living thing, with its own defined and complex character, its own idiosyncrasies and …its own soul.

What a stupid question
Of course it should be saved and recognised as a jewel of 20th century civic architecture.

It would have been listed and protected but for the block put in by the last administration who got a Certificate of Immunity which is due to expire Sept 2026

Hence the sudden push

Listening to the weather forecast is part of the job for landscape photographers. Things don’t always go to plan, however, and the promise of early morning mist can come to nothing. It has happened to me many times, but this was one of those mornings when I was in luck. This is Bridgnorth seen...

I think at this point the UK has accepted Paddington as the Death Bear, collector of souls. So, I think as a nation we should start smearing marmalade on the eyes of the dead and whisper “fare for the crossing”. It’ll feel weird now but, in three of four generations, no one will question it.

These beautiful late Victorian chestnut choir stalls inside St Mark's, Brithdir were produced by a small family-run firm of wood carvers in Somerset.

So, how did they end up in this church in North Wales?

The BBC once made the arts ‘utterly central’ to television – 100 years later they’re almost invisible
After British television was established in 1926, it went on to foster a productively rich relationship with the arts, but coverage has seriously declined this century.
