I felt like I was losing my mind watching this person's remarks and had to write about how disgusting they are.
Sarah Hurwitz Profanes the Holocaust
Holocaust education has worked too well for the Obama speechwriter, since when she rationalizes Israel's genocide, "I sound obscene." Maybe sit with that, Sarah

WE WON. I am *begging* you to take note of who did this. *Not* UCLA admin—they’re still scuttling around behind closed doors, attempting to appease—but FACULTY AND STAFF, led by AAUP.
BREAKING: In AAUP et al v. Trump (wall-to-wall union lawsuit challenging the administration’s unlawful use of TItle VI to reshape the University of California system), the faculty and staff of the UC system WON!!!

We were granted our preliminary injunction! @aaup.org

Kyle Kingsbury is not a journalist. He is not an op-ed writer.

He is a computer safety researcher.

And he has written one of the most compelling, comprehensive accounts of the ongoing hell in Chicago that you could possibly imagine.

In under 1600 words.

you really couldn't do better than 25 years after 9/11 dick cheney finally dies on the same day as a majority of NYC voters elect a socialist muslim mayor. that is some mythic lightbearer being sweatily forged in the darkness type mythos.

Sora 2 is not being “misused” when people use it to produce racist, transphobic, misogynistic, & otherwise vile images—it exists to make it easier to put these images out into the world. Calling it a “misuse” is a grave misunderstanding of what these companies are up to, & lets OpenAI off the hook.

very funny that we've spent like two decades in a media environment where fictional depictions of villain are expected to be nuanced and have complex motives and then the country gets taken over by people who are like "hurting people makes me feel like a big strong man :)"

U.S. labor historians, like Elizabeth Faue, have been writing about the significance of work being coded as male for many decades. And, even as service sector work has accelerated, the image of a “worker” in popular understandings remains white and male.

As a bookstore clerk I resented that every page of this book is printed on coated paper, not just the pages with color plates. It’s just so unnecessary for it to be so dang heavy.
"Sapiens" is so normal for the first 70,000 years of human history but then goes absolutely buckwild as soon as it gets to colonialism

that users could prefer a generated simulation to actual old clips for nostalgia purposes clarifies how nostalgia is about consuming "decontextualization" in itself — nostalgia negates history under the auspices of longing for it
YouTube has a legit library of recordings from quotidian settings (which are interesting, mostly as historical markers) but instead of promoting that social media pushes soulless facsimiles solely meant to associate a feeling with a moment sans the immediate, substantive context
This is doing numbers on social media right now and it's so depressing how people truly yearn for this shit and want to preserve that feeling indefinitely like a mausoleum of false memories.

Hopefully the whole Bari Weiss thing and Ezra Klein thing starts waking people up to the fact that corporate media is mostly populated with mediocre people who have made millions and gained unbelievable influence because they threaten nothing and tell wealthy people exactly what they want to hear.

really should get around to writing my take that "AI uprising/robot uprising" fiction is just barely sublimated fear of domestic slave revolt
It is morally wrong to want a computer to be sentient. If you owned a sentient thing, you would be a slaver. If you want sentient computers to exist, you just want to create a new kind of slavery. The ethics are as simple as that. Sorry if this offends

I don't think we'll ever get another sentence which sums up everything the New York Times embodies quite like "Some legal experts have called it a crime to summarily kill civilians".
hey @nytimes.com: there is no counterpoint here. There are no credible legal experts who would EVER say that the US military has any right or authority to blow civilian craft out of the Caribbean and kill their crews from afar without any provocation. There is no other side to this question.

Exactly, the Dems' "condescension problem" is almost entirely a creation of right-wing media.
Honestly think the only way to solve the condescension problem is to stop insisting that we have one. It's very obvious why your opponent would call you condescending for being smart and right; stand up for yourself!
Klein is also obsessed with solving Democrats’ “condescension problem” but it’s not condescending to talk about how your political opponents are wrong! That’s kind of how it works.

“Integrity” is a deeply polysemic word. It can mean “holding your principles” but it can also mean “being whole, feeling like yourself.” These execs are discovering they can acquiesce and still feel like themselves…bc our society’s worship of the market uber alles has created these selves.

Almost every design choice and optimization for large language model-based "AI" comes from the designers' terror of ever hearing the words "you're wrong" or even just "no."
