I think the most straightforward framing that captures the severity of the situation is that the government of the United States has been seized by a mad authoritarian regime not meaningfully distinct from Putin or Kim or, well, Maduro, and its members must be brought to harsh justice

The way the press is treating chatbots, like they have agency and they “know” things all of a sudden, crossed the line recently from dumb and obsequious to something else entirely. Treating them as alive and making conscious decisions is an almost religious belief. It won’t age well.

i find the "what rights should ai have if it's intelligent? maybe it already is! how can you treat something potentially intelligent badly?" debates tiresome for many reasons but chiefly that many humans are not treated particularly well, including by chatbots

the thing is, it seems like after the r slur comes back, the n word is being defended in the atlantic, every op-ed starting with how me too and blm "went too far," csam is the next logical step to get laundered into the discourse as an open question that can be debated

I sometimes feel bad for the white guys in my grad school cohort who are normal, kind, supportive, and hard working. many joined the program after taking non traditional paths because men, especially white dudes in california, don't really go to college anymore

I think this is true and one reason why I dislike the casual bashing of libs, wine-moms/soccer-moms, MSNBC watchers etc instead of the criticism of specific elite institutions and individuals for junkyard dog defense of indefensible government policies
I always try to emphasize this: in the big picture, the median liberal, aka the kind of person who donates to ActBlue, or is a campaign volunteer, or who makes up part of one of many of the legacy liberal organizations, is to the left of the median liberal think tanker or Congressman on Palestine.
The latter very feverishly thinks Israeli ultranationalism is just plainly good and that Palestinians should suffer under it for eternity and also that the US should for whatever reason underwrite this arrangement with its full soft and hard power

i live in a wealthy neighborhood in california which was a reckless financial decision on my part but anyway recently i saw a group of literal children, could not have been 18 yet, maybe not even 17, filming a lamborghini from a truck
i've been a kumail nanjiani fan for a long time but i really like the way his new special kind of ... understands how his appeal has changed? like i feel like his delivery has gotten a little less unexpected and weird, but it fits the new persona and the jokes are tighter

i was really skeptical of that la times article about the black dahlia killer and the zodiac killer being the same person before i read it but tbh i buy that the poor girl's really creepy medical student ex boyfriend did it. some of the "clues" the guy found seem ... dubious though

rarely let myself look at goodreads reviews but today i came across one for a book on writing novels which gives four stars for one of the best reading experiences the reviewer ever had. she deducted one star because she doesn't want to write a novel. tough crowd

one thing that's nice about training a lot of people is i don't think people are functionally illiterate so much as I think people misinterpreting what you thought you said very clearly is just ... a part of human interaction, regardless of medium
