i want to repeat this: mamdani and spanberger have run similar campaigns tailored to their respective electorates and it is maddening to watch political journalists attempt to create some broad contrast where none exist
the other thing about this is that there is no reason to pit these candidates against each other? each are good fits for their respective electorates and each shows the value of vigorous campaigns focused on the stated material problems of voters.

All day, many of you have been asking for a Cheney obituary from me. Get ready:
His Works Completed, Dick Cheney, Mass Murderer of Iraqis and American Democracy, Dies
As much as the Trumpists claim to disavow the War on Terror, they walk a path paved by the most powerful vice president in U.S. history.

The offer made to women in the enticement to become trad wives is the same as the offer made to citizens in the enticement to embrace authoritarianism: give up. Abandon the aspiration to self rule. It’s imprisonment recast as rest and relief.
A gender lens remains one of the best ways to understand far right authoritarian regimes. Male order is imposed through a family-like structure, with women subservient and children taught that fear is the price of belonging www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-i...
From Nazi Germany to Trump’s America: why strongmen rely on women at home
Fascist regimes pushed narratives of domestic bliss, yet relied on women’s unpaid labor. In the US today, ‘womanosphere’ influencers promote the same fantasies

The U.S.’s largest estuary is showing signs of revival. Once written off as a dead zone, water clarity in Chesapeake Bay has improved, underwater grasses are expanding, and crab populations are steadier thanks to decades of pollution controls. Nature buff.ly/morNFth

In places throughout the U.S. where plastic bags require a fee or have been banned, fewer bags end up at the water’s edge, according to research published Thursday in Science.
Banning Plastic Bags Works to Limit Shoreline Litter, Study Finds
Using crowdsourced data from shore cleanups, researchers found that areas that enacted plastic bag bans or fees had fewer bags littering their lakes, rivers and beaches than those without them.

This is basically the old "freedom of association" defense of segregation, that white people shouldn't have to associate with black people if they didn't want to
In a few short weeks, the Supreme Court may very well find in favor of a man who is suing to stop PrEP coverage for millions because he objects to theoretical possibility that someone he employs could one day access PrEP via insurance, and this "encourages and facilitates homosexual behavior."

Hey, just a quiet reminder: it’s not true that people get more conservative as they age. *Populations* get more conservative as they age because poor and marginalized people die sooner.

Seniors Are More Conservative Because the Poor Die Off
Sometimes older voters aren’t just naturally more conservative. It’s just that wealthier and whiter people tend to live longer and healthier lives.

Stephanie McMurray’s “Masters of Small Worlds” — a brilliant study of why poor southern whites not only tolerated but embraced slaveholders who treated them with contempt — is important here. If the church and the press convince you that you and the oligarchs are one, you’ll happily shoot your foot.
